We need to call a thing what it is. Black tax dollars are fueling an economy that too often leaves Black people out. In an all-Black neighborhood, not one Black face on the crew fixing the roads we paid for. That’s not a coincidence—it’s a system. This is taxation without representation. It’s time for Black elected officials to hold the line: no more contracts without Black representation. Until there’s equity in who gets the work and who benefits from our tax dollars, we must use every bit of our power to shift resources toward our people. In a state that’s 34% Black, a parish that’s 48% Black, and a city that’s 56% Black, it is unacceptable for public dollars to keep flowing to companies that shut Black workers out. We can’t force them to hire us—but our leaders don’t have to keep voting to fund them either. And every time somebody brings up crime in our communities, I’m going to bring up jobs. I have never called a contractor to do work on my home who isn’t Black. Why? Because if we aren’t intentional about investing in Black businesses they don’t succeed and can’t scale. We change that when we invest our money through supporting the business. Each year I keep a track of how much I’ve spent with Black businesses and people. We should all look at how much we #BuyBlack so we can grow our own individual impact in our community. Black businesses supply Black jobs which help make our communities stable, resourced, and safe. It’s Black business month, #BuyBlack and do your part to help build a stronger Black ecosystem.

I mentioned on rolandsmartin that @syritarsteib, @emilewashington, @wcsnowden and I went to St. James Parish to talk with Black folks about their power. It’s not wrong for Black people to want to see our tax dollars working for our communities. When the lack of Black leadership makes that deficit worse, uplifting Black leadership isn’t racist — it’s survival and wisdom. Right now, people from THIS state are trying to dismantle the Voting Rights Act. To act like race isn’t a factor is a lie. If we want a thriving future, we must use our critical mass, and demand real outcomes in return for our support. We pay into a system — and it should pay back into our communities. We are not hopeless or powerless, we are misinformed, uninformed, or disengaged. All of which can be addressed. When people ask what can we do, start talking to people and asking deeper questions to ensure they understand their power.
