Black & White turned 25 this year. Developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2001, the project was led by none other than Peter Molyneux. It is widely regarded as a textbook example of a game that was too ambitious for its time, resources, and team... size. Still critically acclaimed and a cult favourite, it underperformed commercially relative to the massive hype surrounding it (and Molyneux’s name). The game combined god-game mechanics (influencing villagers and facing moral choices between good and evil), a learning AI creature, gesture-based controls, hand-of-god interaction, and a massive open world. This was groundbreaking in 2001, but it also pushed hardware limits too far for the average user. I’m not surprised it came from Lionhead Studios. Sword of Sodan (1988) might look awfully cheesy today, but boy, was this game incredible in the 80s! Massive - and I really mean MASSIVE - sprites, probably bigger than in any other game at the time. They looked absolutely awesome. It plays like a trashy Conan B-movie, but who cares when the dude (or dudette) you're controlling takes up half the screen and you hack 'n' slash your way through even bigger enemies? Created by three guys from Denmark, it was published by Discovery Software (Amiga and Apple IIGS), Electronic Arts (Genesis), and Bethesda Softworks (Mac). It was also indexed in Germany for being too graphic. Hilarious.

A classic from the golden era: Anno 1602 (created by Max Design in 1998). It was a massive surprise blockbuster, both commercially and critically acclaimed. The game kickstarted what eventually turned into a franchise that is still alive today with its most recent release, Anno 117, from November 2025. So, what made the first Anno game so great? For its time it showed incredible attention to detail: excellent graphics, a wonderful soundtrack, and above all a highly addictive “just one more minute” gameplay - seeing your empire grow through colonization and trade. Other games such as Sim City or The Settlers had a similar vibe, that slow and steady progress, and sometimes just zooming out and looking at what you had created was reward enough. This was also true for Anno, simply looking at it, while life hustled and bustled by, was wonderful. Perfect for late night gaming sessions when reflexes and speed were not at peak anymore.

Maybe inspired by the synergy between the PlayStation and Namco’s arcade-compatible hardware, Sega also developed the Dreamcast and NAOMI together to make arcade-to-console ports much easier for their own games. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

MDK (1997) is a cult classic third-person shooter developed by Shiny Entertainment. You play as Kurt Hectic (what a name!), a janitor on the spaceship Jim Dandy, recruited by the eccentric scientist Dr. Fluke Hawkins to stop an alien invasion. Massive alien “Minecrawlers” are ravaging Earth, flattening cities and harvesting resources. That's where you come in to stop the whole thing... Developed by brothers Rand & Robyn Miller (Cyan), Myst had over 2,500 photorealistic pre-rendered images, 40 minutes of original ambient music, and 66 minutes of video on a single CD-ROM. Many say it helped kickstart the CD-ROM era (1993 was still heavily dominated by 3.5" disks), which was an expensive hardware luxury back then. It looked and sounded like nothing else. There was no combat. No death. And also no hand-holding. Just you, a mysterious island, books, levers, codes, and puzzles in beautifil, lonely worlds - you had to figure it out, the gameplay was open and non-linear. It felt like stepping into a painting, and you could argue it was one of the first games with true immersion (again, for its time - remember this was 1993). It sold over 6 million copies, and stayed the best-selling PC game for 9 (!) years until The Sims in 2002. It created a whole new audience and changed what people expected from PC gaming forever, the bar was raised to a whole new level. I'm playing GTA V on a PS3 and its been such a fun experience. I remember when was a kid and playing this for the first time, I didn't give a damn about how BAD the framerate was during driving. I was constantly in awe by how realistic this game looked back then that the framerate wasn't something that was going to stop me from enjoying it. Don't get me wrong, this game is running on a PS3 that has 256mb of RAM and 256mb of VRAM which is some black magic itself and the fact that Rockstar Games managed to have such a massive open world game with that much traffic and NPCs running in real-time is a feat on its own.

The intros of some 90s games with their epic monologues and bombastic music still gets me to this day! I feel that among the legends like Dune 2, Age of Empires and Command & Conquer, some games have gotten lost in the shuffle a bit - at least to a degree. One of those is Total Annihilation (1997), a groundbreaking real-time strategy game by Cavedog Entertainment, led by Chris Taylor. Interesting note: The producer of the game was none other than Ron Gilbert (the genius behind Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island). Players build massive armies, managing streaming metal and energy resources, limitless, gathered via extractors, for factories churning out tanks, aircraft, and nukes. Epic battles feature thousands of units, realistic physics, radar jamming, and Jeremy Soule's orchestral score. It has a 96% approval rating on Steam, so it shows that even today - almost 30 years later - TA still has a strong following and active mod community. It also shows that a selected group of those 90s games found the perfect balance between cocept, gameplay, difficulty and replayability, a true testament to greatness

Populous II by Bullfrog (1991). This was a great example of how a sequel should be: bigger, better graphics, and more features, while keeping the core concept untouched. For a 35-year-old game, Populous II holds up remarkably well. The only thing that feels a little dated from a modern perspective is the relatively small world screen (the actual game area), which takes up roughly half the display. There's a lot of "dead space" around it that could have been used. I sometimes wonder if this was done for performance reasons - meaning a smaller active area with all the game action happening was easier on the hardware and made the game smoother and faster. My technical skills are far too limited to understand it, but I've often wondered the same about other games with plenty of dead space.

Microsoft attempted to create its own version of Uncharted for the Xbox Black Tusk Studios, now known as The Coalition, was working on the game, which was dubbed Project Ranger, when the Xbox One was being built. The firm had been working on a Halo game for the Kinect when they were asked to create a game using elements of Uncharted. Grand Theft Auto III turns 25 this year. It was the first in the series to switch to a 3D third-person perspective; the previous two used a bird’s-eye top-down view. It still blows my mind how epic it looks even now, a quarter of a century later. In 2001, this was one of most badass games of the year. The open world and the massive depth and scope were truly incredible. Also, how you go from Lemmings to GTA will forever be the biggest curveball in gaming history.

From Dan Lorenc on the malware attack that almost took down the entire internet last year: “There’s a popular compression library that’s used in almost every piece of software. And it had been maintained by one person in his spare time for the last 20 years. And then a couple years ago, somebody just decided to start helping him. They jumped in, fixed a bunch of bugs, and did a lot of great work. And then that first person got tired of working on it. So he handed the whole project over to this other person. It turned out that other person was just a pseudonym and was not a real person. And within six months of getting control of the project, they had put in a carefully orchestrated set of malware that was really hard to detect and no one noticed. And because it was so widely used, the exploit would've basically given that person remote access to any computer running that piece of software, which was basically everything connected to the Internet. But because it was open source and the code was transparent, some random engineer just happened to be running some benchmarks on a weekend. And he noticed that program was a little bit slower than it used to be, and that it was making a weird cryptographic operation to check something. And right before this thing got widely deployed across every device, he dug in, and discovered that there was a backdoor put in. This was the closest thing to a full-blown internet crisis that we’ve ever had. And they still have no idea who did it. It was just an anonymous email account. No one ever traced it back to an individual. And that's the long game. This person spent years just doing good work and earning the communities trust.”
