We’re joined by Tor Frick, Creative Director at Neon Giant to talk about NoLawTheGame and how Unreal Engine enabled their small team to create an immersive, high-fidelity shooter. Using Nanite, Neon Giant were able to create pipelines that helped their artists handcraft spaces with intention and retain high detail across surfaces. MetaHuman, Lumen, MegaLights, PCG and Niagara Data Channels enabled the team to achieve their vision for Port Desire, with NPCs that react to dynamic lighting and a world that reflects the player's exploration.

Today we have a direct hardware capture of an upcoming Sega Dreamcast homebrew title, tentatively known as "DemoTek," from developer, ac3t1ne, whose goal is to create a Crash Bandicoot-style platformer. The game uses our GLdc implementation of OpenGL 1.2 for rendering, libADX for music, and with my own SH4ZAM library for vector math, all of which are first-party ports provided within the KallistiOS indie DC SDK. The engine already features a renderer with some fairly aggressive batching and pre-submission culling, some clever LOD tricks and frame blending (notice the lava animates at twice the FPS when the player is close to it), as well as a particle system, which drives the smoke and bubbles. Something that I find quite interesting and exciting is that ac3t1ne has also managed to create a kind of update manager which can check for newer versions of the game (or any other Dreamcast binary), then download it via dial-up modem or broadband adapter, and install it onto an SD card! Latest preview of Midnight Heist, a completely onchain pvp tactics game. (skip to 0:50 if you want to go straight to the fighting) We started development 4 months ago, and the game is fully functional on Polygon Mumbai testnet. How does it work? 1. You create the best team of 4 operators you can with a draft of operators, armor, weapons, and gadgets. 2. You submit your lineup and how your team positions itself on the map. This is hashed onchain. 3. You and your opponent reveal your hash, and the battle begins! 4. The battle is ran through our onchain battle engine, and then fed through to Unity to render your battle. 5. Check out a preview of a battle below! We will use September and October to add new features like account abstraction (huge for onchain games), Loot Boxes, NFT cosmetic integration, as well as balance and optimize the game. Will be launching into open beta in November. Really proud of our team and the pace and quality that we are shipping this game. Can't wait for you all to try it.

AI can give actors jobs, not replace them. Many years ago, I was lucky to work on the LucasArts game "Full Throttle" by TimOfLegend. I worked on the opening cinematic (back then called cutscenes!), and it was always one of my favorite games of that era, and the one I felt had the most potential to be a film. It felt like a movie. A few weeks ago, I had an idea for a new FilmSpark.ai demo: a biker bar scene. Then I said, "Hey, let's make it the bar from Full Throttle!" Just for fun. That's when I was pointed to the Peter screenplay for Full Throttle. It was cool to see someone else thought this had film potential too. After reading the screenplay, and seeing how he kept the opening cinematic mainly intact, we decided to make a proof-of-concept AI teaser, recreating the opening cinematic as accurately as we could. We used the original audio for authenticity. Hamilton Camp's Corley felt a little cartoonish on the AI character, which was weird but cool. Mark Hamill's Ripburger worked even better. Our goal is something becoming very common in Hollywood right now: using AI to create a sizzle trailer to get a film funded. Think of it as the new graphic novel. We want to use AI to get a film greenlit with real actors, shot on location, and use AI for VFX as needed. To be clear, we are not advocating for an "AI Full Throttle film." This is one way Hollywood is using AI, behind the scenes.

I wanted to create something that felt timeless a chocolate brown Lamborghini Countach, an old-money atmosphere, a powerful woman, a luxury mansion party, natural daylight, authentic human interactions, and a commercial so realistic it wouldn't feel AI-generated at all. So I sat down with ChatGPT and explained the vision in detail. First, we built the story. I described the world, the mood, the characters, the setting, and the feeling I wanted viewers to experience. From there, ChatGPT helped transform that vision into a complete narrative, turning scattered ideas into a cinematic concept. Next came the planning stage. The story was broken down into a professional commercial timeline, scene by scene, shot by shot, exactly how a luxury automotive campaign would be storyboarded by a creative director and videographer. Then we went even deeper. Every scene was translated into detailed prompts, camera directions, movement instructions, lighting setups, slow-motion sequences, environmental details, character positioning, and luxury automotive close-ups. Once the sequence felt perfect, those ideas were converted into structured JSON prompts to maintain consistency throughout the project. After that, I generated individual storyboard images for every scene. Each image became a visual reference frame representing a specific moment of the commercial the mansion, the audience, the old-money styling, the Countach hero shots, the interior reveals, the scissor doors, and the final cinematic departure. Those reference images were then brought into Yapper where I used Seedance 2.0 to generate the actual video sequences. Multiple generations. Multiple revisions. Multiple refinements. Frame by frame, the vision started becoming reality. Finally, I edited both video sequences together, refined the pacing, synchronized the transitions, selected the music, and shaped everything into one seamless luxury automotive commercial. Week 1 of the JT15D teardown is done! We pulled the accessory gearbox, got into the external engine lines, and started getting a real feel for what 10+ years in a warehouse does to an engine. Every fitting was a fight, every seal was fused, and I learned pretty quickly that this teardown is going to demand a lot more patience than I expected. One thing I did not anticipate is how long quality videos actually take to produce. Between the teardown sessions, the scanning, the documentation, and everything else happening on this project, there is just not enough time right now to film and edit the videos I actually want to make. So for now I am capturing as much footage as I can, and once the teardown is complete I plan to go back through everything and put together videos with a bit more production quality behind them. Week 1 of the JT15D teardown is done! We pulled the accessory gearbox, got into the external engine lines, and started getting a real feel for what 10+ years in a warehouse does to an engine. Every fitting was a fight, every seal was fused, and I learned pretty quickly that this teardown is going to demand a lot more patience than I expected. One thing I did not anticipate is how long quality videos actually take to produce. Between the teardown sessions, the scanning, the documentation, and everything else happening on this project, there is just not enough time right now to film and edit the videos I actually want to make. So for now I am capturing as much footage as I can, and once the teardown is complete I plan to go back through everything and put together videos with a bit more production quality behind them. In fact, I think they complement each other very well. We already saw in the World Cup that they can play together, and that's an idea I keep in mind. Publishers were now forced to invest far more in production quality, bigger budgets, and marketing. Wing Commander sold millions of copies, and helped establish the space sim genre. The game not only paved the way for even larger budgets in its own sequels, but it also pressured other developers and publishers to keep up. Whether this was ultimately good for the industry could still debated today. On one hand, it started an era of cinematic, high-production games.
