This is the Chaatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which was the main opposition party when Sheikh Hasina's Awami League was in power. During that period, the Chaatra Dal were hugely victimised - many were killed, disappeared or jailed. However, with the Awami League gone, the BNP and Chaatra Dal are ascendent and we are now seeing another face of the student wing, a face that looks eerily similar to that of Awami League's student wing. In the video Chaatra Dal activists are outside a building that was once the house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's pre-eminent Independence leader and once the leader of the Awami League. He was assassinated along with his family on 15 August 1975. Here BNP's Chaatra Dal are shouting slogans, apparently to intimidate any Awami Leaguers from coming and putting down flowers. They are shouting slogans that include: "Dhanmondi Thana, Chaatra Dal. The will power of Khaleda zia" (Thana means police station). This suggests that the Chaatra Dal at least believes the BNP is now in control of the police station in the area, and indeed there are very few police, if any at all, present. There is nothing new about this politics, and it is everything people hated during the Awami league period. What has BNP learned from its years in the opposition. Not much positive it seems.

But in the current reality and overall context of Bangladesh, whenever I sit down to write about independence, liberation war, history-tradition, development and law and order, the topic of Awami League comes up again and again. And that is why, perhaps, a kind of liking and interest in the party is gradually arising without my knowledge. Bangladesh Awami League—a name, a history. One of the largest political organizations in the world. This party has several crores of supporters and has a golden history. As an organization that gave birth to a country, its pulse is connected with the common people of the country. Various anti-liberation forces in Bangladesh have made various efforts for the last 55 years to stop or destroy the Bangladesh Awami League, which believes in independence, liberation war, free intellect, non-communal consciousness, development and creativity. In continuation of this, the architect of independent Bengal, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was killed along with his family. The Bangladesh Awami League has been banned at various times and initiatives have been taken to suspend or limit its political activities. Many believe and politically assess that after the political changes that took place in the context of the student movement in August 2024, the anti-liberation forces united to bring down the then Sheikh Hasina government. Later, the activities of Bangladesh Awami League, one of the oldest and most traditional political organizations in the country, were banned. At the same time, allegations of arrest, harassment, and torture of thousands of Awami League leaders and activists have also come to the fore. There may be political differences, but violence, oppression, killing, or extrajudicial harassment against leaders and activists of any political party can never be acceptable in a democratic society. These incidents are condemnable, inhumane, and contrary to the rule of law and human rights. History testifies that no political organization can be permanently erased through administrative or repressive measures. Political ideologies can only be confronted through political and democratic processes. However, the history of Awami League is very long and deep; it cannot be easily erased. Tomorrow, June 23, is the 77th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami League. Warm greetings to the party's leaders, activists, supporters and well-wishers on this historic day. Joy Bangla. Additionally, no “state of emergency” currently prevails in Bangladesh. Therefore, activists of the party were fully within their constitutional, democratic, and legal rights to organize a peaceful procession to commemorate “Martyr #NurHossain Day”. The unelected interim regime led by Dr. #Yunus is happy to allow all other parties and orgs to hold political programmes almost on a daily basis, incl. #BNP, #Jamaat, and the SAD Movement. It is also providing full assistance to #Islamist orgs like #HefazateIslam and Islami Andolon in organizing programmes. Their issue only seems to be with the Awami League and its allies. The very definition of #discrimination. Pursuant to that policy, the Yunus regime publicly announced their intention to obstruct the AL from exercising its right to organise a peaceful procession on Nov 10. The unequivocal intentions were expressed by the so-called Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam (1) and Adviser Asif Mahmud (2). Both warned of strict action of law enforcement agencies against AL. (1) (2) To obstruct a legitimate and peaceful political programme by a legitimate political party, the regime deployed the police, the army and an unprecedented 191 platoons of border guards (3). The street-enforcers of Yunus’ regime, the SAD, also announced a counter political programme at the same venue just hours before where AL activists were supposed to congregate for the procession, with a clear intent to provoke a confrontation (4). The fact that the SAD Movement had violent intentions is clear from social media posts of people associated with the platform (5). (3) (4) (5) Screenshots & Video clip From the morning of Nov 10, SAD-backed thugs, with full support from BNP and Jamaat armed cadres, took positions in various key points of #Dhaka to violently obstruct AL activists and supporters from reaching the venue. At least 43 activists and supporters of the party were arrested from Motijheel, Dilkusha, and Paltan areas (6). People were beaten up, including senior citizens and women, and handed over to the police simply for chanting the slogan “#JoyBangla”, or even on mere suspicions of being an AL supporter (7). SAD-linked students, BNP-Jamaat cadres, and the police even checked people’s mobile phones on Nov 10 (8) and the night before (9) to “identify” AL supporters and activists.
