At typical fighting range, a 12-pound iron cannonball traveling a quarter mile per second has enough energy to pass through TWO SOLID FEET of oak hull planking, sending lethal wood splinters flying in all directions, killing or maiming men on the other side. The splinters were often deadlier than the ball itself. That's a detail the film actually gets right: surgeons of the period pulled more wood out of men than iron. That's with a 12-pounder. Imagine what one of the bigger ships could do with 18 and 32 pound cannons 😵

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (1991) brought a close to their excellent World War II trilogy, which began with Battlehawks 1942 and continued with Their Finest Hour. The game came with a huge, incredibly detailed manual packed with historical background on the Western European air war from 1943 to 1945, technical specifications for every aircraft, and real air combat tactics. It wasn’t made for casual players but a true feast for fans who loved deep, historically accurate flight simulations. Lucasfilm later became LucasArts and shifted successfully into space combat with X-Wing and Tie Fighter, but sadly they never made another historical simulation.
