ROLLS-ROYCE HAS MADE THE TRENT XWB-84 EP THE NEW STANDARD FOR THE A350-900 The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) is proving that even a highly successful engine can still be improved. Originally targeting around a 1% fuel-burn reduction, the XWB-84 EP has reportedly delivered savings closer to 1.8% in service, with Delta among the airlines reporting strong results. The improvements come without changing the engine’s basic architecture, meaning it remains compatible with the existing A350-900 wing pylons. Rolls-Royce focused on areas including airflow optimization, cruise performance and internal cooling efficiency to squeeze more efficiency from the proven design. The results have been significant enough that Rolls-Royce has retired the baseline XWB-84 from new sales campaigns, with the Enhanced Performance version now becoming the standard offering for new A350-900s. In 2017, an AirAsia X Airbus A330-300 suffered a Rolls-Royce Trent 700 fan blade failure caused by metal fatigue. The fractured blade was contained, but the engine sustained severe internal damage and violent vibrations, forcing the crew to shut it down, descend, and safely return to Perth. In the late 1990s, Rolls-Royce needed a new engine. The old pushrod V8 that had powered their cars for decades could no longer meet European emissions regulations. Rolls-Royce's went looking for a supplier and BMW stepped forward with something specific, a 5.4L aluminium alloy V12, built exclusively for this car. The M73 engine, the same unit from the BMW 750i, 850i, was adapted for the Silver Seraph with a five-speed ZF automatic gearbox. It produced 326 PS and made the Silver Seraph the first Rolls-Royce with a twelve-cylinder engine since the 1939 Phantom III. It was also the first Rolls-Royce ever designed using computer-aided design software. The body was 65% stiffer than the car it replaced. And then, while the Silver Seraph was still in production, BMW acquired Rolls-Royce entirely. The engine supplier became the owner.

$FLASHBACK: On April 17, 2018, Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, a Boeing 737-700, suffered an uncontained CFM56-7B engine failure at FL320 after a fan blade fractured due to an undetected low-cycle fatigue crack. The failed blade tore through the engine nacelle, causing parts of the inlet and fan cowl to separate. Debris struck the fuselage and shattered a cabin window, leading to rapid cabin depressurization. One passenger was fatally injured after being partially pulled out of the aircraft, while the crew safely diverted and landed in Philadelphia just 17 minutes later. The NTSB found that the engine fan cowl structure was not designed to withstand the loads generated by this type of fan-blade-out event. The accident prompted major safety changes, including mandatory ultrasonic inspections of CFM56-7B fan blades, reinforced engine nacelle structures, stronger fan cowl latch assemblies, and FAA Airworthiness Directives requiring inspections and modifications across the Boeing 737 NG fleet. Flight SW1380, originated from LaGuardia, New York, and heading to Dallas Love Field, was diverted to Philadelphia.$

It is horrific. We were just trying to analyse the preliminary report of the Boeing 787 Air India crash on 12th June. Lately till yesterday, we got to know that another Boeing 787 in the pilot defect report, which is part of the technical log book of the aircraft, the pilot in command has given a noting which is in black and white, which clearly states that the fuel control switch, which is one of the most essential switches in the Boeing 787, has faltered, has misbehaved and it is quite appalling as an aviator that the same switch was part of an inquiry report which led to the Air India crash. We must understand that this fuel control switch is guarded by the manufacturer, has misbehaved. In this particular instance, the operator, the regulator and the manufacturer, all three of them have to introspect. The country cannot take this lightly..."

Let me show you the thrust reverse ops check after performing maintenance on a GE90. The outer sleeve translates rearward, exposing the cascade vanes. At the same time the blocker doors inside the bypass duct deploy to block the normal rearward airflow. All that fan air gets redirected forward through the cascades... that’s reverse thrust helping the aircraft stop. If you’ve only seen it from the cabin or side, take a look at the back view in the video to get the full picture.
