Desmids are single-celled freshwater algae with remarkable shapes and ornamentations. This species, Micrasterias rotata, is one of the larger ones and mainly lives in acidic bogs, making it rare. Whilst it’s sad to see, we’re used to newly planted saplings or individual street trees dying from lack of water. I don’t think we’re prepared for the shock of seeing our precious native deciduous woodlands around our dying as a result of drought though. This weekend I was in a native woodland in Norfolk, and saw whole areas of the forest where trees were in a bad way. Many of the trees had clearly run out of water, with their leaves brown, crispy & burnt. Some trees are likely to die from this drought, many more if droughts keep happening. Will we just standby & watch our forest & ancient woodlands die? We need immediate action on the ultimate cause of climate change of course. But given that extreme heat & drought is already here, we need to urgently put together a strategy to enable our forests to adapt to the changing climate as far as they are able to. Obvious things to do include restoring ancient woodlands to health by removing invasive species like rhododendron & cherry laurel; getting rid of non-native pine plantations & replacing with native trees that are more drought tolerant; blocking up drainage & creating ponds & swales so that woodlands retain water; expanding woodlands & creating buffer zones around them. These are just a few ideas: more than anything, we need government to listen to tree experts, come up with a proper plan & then have the will to implement that plan as a matter of national importance. Without this, we may lose much of our ancient woodland in our lifetime.

It is time to stop treating environmental action as an optional extra. It is time to move beyond token gestures and towards meaningful change. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us remember that every choice we make has an impact on nature, on the climate, and on each other. Some things we can all do: 🌿 Refuse single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic consumption. 🌿 Segregate and manage waste at source. 🌿 Waste less. Consume mindfully. 🌿 Protect forests, trees, wetlands and natural ecosystems. 🌿 Support organisations working for wildlife conservation and environmental protection. 🌿 Work with local authorities and communities to scale solutions that restore ecosystems and build resilience. 🌿 Invest in businesses and innovations that place people and planet at the heart of progress. These are some of the things I try to do. Some of the things we can all do. The environment is not separate from us. The container is almost as big as their small body. There is no mother walking beside them. No father to carry the water for them. No family waiting safely inside a home. They lost them all. Now they are searching alone for something no child should ever have to beg for: Water. 💔 Some children walk for hours beneath the unbearable heat and return with nothing. 💔 Some drink unsafe and contaminated water because thirst leaves them no other choice. 💔 Some fall asleep with dry mouths and empty bottles beside them. 💔 Some are too weak from hunger and dehydration to carry the water they desperately need. These are not children asking for toys. They are not asking for comfort. They are asking: “Will I drink today?” Imagine losing your mother, your father, your home and everyone who once protected you… Then waking up thirsty inside a crowded tent, with no one left to search for water except you. A child should never have to choose between drinking contaminated water and dying of thirst. Please listen to me instead: It’s important to remember that although scientists estimate the ocean produces at least 50% of the oxygen on Earth (from oceanic plankton — drifting plants, algae, and some bacteria), roughly the SAME AMOUNT IS CONSUMED BY MARINE LIFE. So unless you are a fish, don't rely too much on it. We need forests because they are crucial for air quality, regulate the climate by absorbing massive CO2, prevent erosion and landslide, support biodiversity, and provide oxygen that stays in the atmosphere longer because it's not consumed by marine decomposition, UNLIKE much of the ocean's oxygen.
