Coaching from the stands is disrespectful to … Your kid!! The best players can figure out solutions on their own, they don’t need help from the stands. Each game is an opportunity for players to learn how to do that. Yes, they will fail, but they will learn. And ultimately they will be a better player because of it. Shouting instructions from the stands only shows that you don’t believe they have the ability to make adjustments, and you aren’t good with failing so they can grow.

The key to installing a PBO is to keep the main thing the main thing. Explain to your players the most important principles of play and continuously emphasize them throughout the season. These principles will become a constraint or a guide that will get their attention and intentions. Players will self-organize with tasks (constraints) and if you allow them to complete these tasks, you will see them playing great team offense. You don’t need to explain every last detail, just get them started with the basics of shot selection, spacing, ball movement, creating advantages with matchups or 2-man game, and off-ball picking. Using constraints like an 8-9 second shot clock on a side will get them to flip the field. Or, if you’re not picking off-ball it’s a turnover. Or if you hang out on the crease it’s a turnover. These are simple ways to get your team to play incredible and unpredictable team offense. Obviously, installing a PBO in one minute isn’t going to be a time constraint for your average coach, but the point of this reel is you would be amazed at how well your team will play when you take off the reigns and focus on the principles. Throughout the season there will be glaring strengths and weaknesses that you will have to address, but again, use constraints to do the teaching and keep the focus on the Principles.

Steve Hansen, legendary All-Blacks coach… Discussing the importance of getting your feedback with players spot on. He talks of empathy – to see the world through the eyes of your players. Perhaps not to experience the same emotion that‘s running through their body, but to accept that emotion exists during this interaction. And perhaps not to agree with the sporting lens this player brings to the meeting but to accept it this players sporting view might be different to yours as coach. Empathy! Too much focus on overloaded practices, rondos and positional play inevitably leads to quick play and Group possession focus type outcomes. Also when do you let your players practice moving at full speed with the ball? This is where ball Mastery comes in and 1v1, 2v2 & 3v3 practices. I say the players I work with all the time. You should be able to move as quickly with the ball as you do without it, but unfortunately most Team sessions the ⚽️becomes like a hot potato.

Points aren’t the separator… Players are so consumed with how many points they average, and OBVIOUSLY points set the level… you need to be able to score it. But when you dive in to separating players that score the ball at the same rate… it’s about HOW they go about it. How are they impacting the game beyond the scoring? How are they getting their shots, and how many shots are they taking? If players focus on the how, their game becomes more well rounded and efficient 👍👍

Yelling “communicate!” doesn’t make your team communicate. If players don’t know what to say or when to say it then they’ll panic, go silent, or shout words that mean nothing. Real communication in a scramble is short, clear, and specific to the moment: 🗣 “I’m out.” 🗣 “You go.” 🗣 “Stay corner.” Want to train it? Try a small-sided game that starts in a scramble. Every time your team fails to use the cues they lose a point.

Billy Donovan shares a lesson that changed how his players thought about winning. At Florida, he had a manager track how long the ball was in each player's hands during a game. He asked one of his starters: "How many minutes do you think you had the ball in your hands for the game?" The player said 15 minutes when he had played 30. The real numbers? "A backcourt player, for the most part, is probably 92% of the game gonna be played without the ball in their hands. A frontcourt player - 95% of their minutes is gonna be played without the ball in their hands." Think about that. You're playing without the ball almost the entire game. "It's amazing to me how many players focus on points, points, points. That's what goes on ESPN. That's what gets the highlights." "But if you're gonna strictly talk about winning and you're really driven and motivated by winning and competing and being a good teammate, you have to look at the fact is -- what am I doing with my 92, 93, 94, 95%?" "Am I screening? Am I running the floor? Am I on the floor for loose basketballs? Am I rebounding? Am I taking a charge?" "There's so many ways to impact the game with the amount of time you're on the floor when the ball's not in your hands." This is what separates good players from winning players. Mr Lampard calls it picturing, borrowing from his father’s term for it. “Pictures, pictures, pictures” Frank Lampard Snr used to shout from the sidelines as he watched his son progress at the West Ham Academy. Why? Because all team invasion sports are the same. At the heart of these games lie the skills of anticipation and decision-making. Players who scan their performance environment give themselves the opportunity to: 1. See opportunities to exploit them 2. See dangers to deal with them 3. See patterns to understand the game around them So, of course, it’s critical to instruct a player to scan. And, of course, creating activities in sessions that encourage scanning is crucial. But here’s the thing. Perhaps the most powerful way to promote scanning behaviour is to help players understand why ‘picture taking’ is important. So often, establishing the meaning underpinning behaviour can change behaviour. Useful can be to encourage players to understand that your team invasion sport is about actions and interactions. They constantly have to interact with their playing environment - teammates, opposition, space, ball, and target. Help them understand they are detectives of what’s happening around them. A Sherlock Holmes of the interacting elements emerging and dissolving, shifting and shaping around them. By moulding their interest in their performance environment, you help your players mentally in two ways. It places their focus of attention outwards - they get out of their head into the game - an external focus of attention. Importantly, it also increases their activation levels (alertness and readiness) due to a rise in their fascination with what’s going on around them (a dopaminergic link here, perhaps). Scanning, scanning, scanning Pictures, pictures, pictures …these are important instructions…but even more powerful could be to help players understand why they need to get their head up and start exploring the game around them.
