The key to installing a PBO is to keep the main thing the main thing. Explain to your players the most important principles of play and continuously emphasize them throughout the season. These principles will become a constraint or a guide that will get their attention and intentions. Players... will self-organize with tasks (constraints) and if you allow them to complete these tasks, you will see them playing great team offense. You don’t need to explain every last detail, just get them started with the basics of shot selection, spacing, ball movement, creating advantages with matchups or 2-man game, and off-ball picking. Using constraints like an 8-9 second shot clock on a side will get them to flip the field. Or, if you’re not picking off-ball it’s a turnover. Or if you hang out on the crease it’s a turnover. These are simple ways to get your team to play incredible and unpredictable team offense. Obviously, installing a PBO in one minute isn’t going to be a time constraint for your average coach, but the point of this reel is you would be amazed at how well your team will play when you take off the reigns and focus on the principles. Throughout the season there will be glaring strengths and weaknesses that you will have to address, but again, use constraints to do the teaching and keep the focus on the Principles.show more

This is a great example of using analytics to inform your principles of play. As you can see, the longer it is in the shot clock, the lower the field goal percentage. As a coach, you have to ask yourself, “How do I slow the other team down?” And one of the ways you can do this is by tagging up on a shot attempt. Tagging up: offensive players will crash the glass by “tagging” the player closest to them. This allows the offense, which is going to defense, to match up already. This slows down transition offenses by “choking” the ball and making it more difficult for players to throw outlet passes. Most importantly, you need to have principles that deal with reality. Embrace reality, deal with it, and have those core principles. If everyone took the time to write down their principles and think about how to deal with specific situations, the world would operate a lot more effectively. I’ve been through those experiences and I wrote down my recipes. You can consider my recipes, or anyone else’s recipes, but at the end of the day, you must believe them and do what is good for you. KEEP OFF SEASON DEVELOPMENT SIMPLE Heading in to the off season soon, we’ll see a lot of players try to get better at everything and make their development more complex than it had to be. So much of development can be solved by focusing on shooting and playing. Within the playing focusing on ball handling (getting 2 feet in the paint), finishing, decisions and reads, guarding on ball and off ball. If you play with purpose and get your shooting reps up before or after you’ll put yourself in a great spot during the off season.

First look at the new Overload play style. This was against the Legend AI Inter Milan team that was using Out Wide in a 3-1-4-2 setup. It definitely feels like a more upgraded version of Possession Game and you do get a lot of options showing for the ball making it way easier to deal with opponents who like to Pressure spam. Out Wide will definitely be a HARD COUNTER to Overload so be careful if you are using Overload and you run into someone like Xabi Alonso who has Quick Counter and Out Wide because if you lose the ball you will be at a big disadvantage when the inevitable cross field switch comes. We will have to see how it settles after a few weeks but it is best to play in a formation with LMFs or RMFs so you can switch the play against Overload if you do win the ball back so you don’t get instantly suffocated and lose the ball.

School ball is coming to a close, and you start to realize that some of these seniors I’ve played baseball with or against since I was 4 years old. Some of these guys I’ve played T ball with. And in just a few weeks…. It will be over. I won’t see them in the hall next year, I won’t see them in class, they won’t be in the clubhouse next year, they won’t be suited up to play in practice or games. They will be gone. Gone on to bigger and better things- off to different colleges around the country. Some will be playing college ball others will just be starting their next chapter somewhere else. In the end…. It’s been a great ride- proud to be your teammate and friend. Don’t take one moment for granted and on to the next chapter. Love this game.
