Boris Cherny, the engineer who built Claude Code: "I don't talk to an agent anymore. I talk to a loop" a prompt is one instruction you babysit. a loop is a goal the AI works toward on its own: > it plans > does the work > checks itself...

Most people are still thinking in prompts

that's where the AI agents are now. The only constraint to me is that it takes some time to train it, and you need to do that, otherwise the outputs will be bad But it's definitely worth it, and you need some degree of CS knowledge

24/7/365 loop. In work mode ai is disciplined worker, in autonomy mode it's way more free what it does, moods can impact his decisions. Meet Genesis. AI strapped to human like brain.

This feels like a shift from controlling AI to trusting a system.

Prompts you babysit loops you just set and forget

@AnatoliKopadze's Loops explainer is great. Glad to see the conversation head towards getting real value out of agents. A thread:

Is this not just the agent loop with human gates? Plan, act, verify, repeat. That pattern has a name already. I think we keep rebranding the same thing and calling it a shift! or maybe I missed the point?

the "loop vs prompt" framing is right but the hard part nobody mentions is the "checks itself" step — self-grading is where loops quietly drift

if you value your time, you're already switching to loops

Dude, that loop mindset is next level. AI handling the full cycle solo? No more constant prompting, just set the goal and let it cook.

Auto loops cut tons of manual oversight hours, yet complex setups carry steep hidden maintenance costs.

The key word is “checks itself.” Without that, the loop is just a long prompt with better branding.

Loops is directionally right, but without independent reviewers it will fall apart because agents will optimize for completion and not correctness.

That's a cool evolution! It's amazing how AI is becoming more self-sufficient.

yeah most people mean 'it tried again 6 times' and call that a loop

because the hard part was never just executing a prompt, but knowing what self-improvement looks like in an unpredictable system. boris is right to call it a loop, not just a task list

HOW TO USE AI LOOPS TO RUN YOUR BUSINESS 24/7 A lot has been written about loop engineering for building products. Almost nothing about using loops to run the business itself. That's the bigger idea. A loop is when you give an agent a goal, a way to check its own work, and permission to keep trying until it hits that goal. Build. Verify. Repeat. Stop when the condition is met. Here's what it looks like in practice: 1/SEO loop You're position 30 for a term you want. The loop runs once a month, makes changes, checks where you rank, and keeps pushing until you're on page one. This is running in production right now on Inbox Zero. 2/Ads loop You're spending $100 a day and losing money. The loop tests creative, checks profitability, kills what fails, and keeps going until the account is in the black. 3/Eval loop Your AI feature is only 88% accurate. The loop keeps adjusting the prompt and swapping the model until it passes 90%. 4/LLM visibility loop People search in ChatGPT now, not just Google. Same loop, new scoreboard. Are we the answer or not? The whole thing hinges on one thing: a metric that comes back black and white. Where do I rank? Did it hit profitability? Did the evals pass? Give an agent that scoreboard and it runs for months. Loops used to run for 30 minutes. These run for a year. Take a step, sleep, wake up next month, take another one. You're basically hiring an agency that never sleeps, gets paid in tokens instead of invoices, and undoes its own mistakes when the number goes down. Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw, on why AI agents still produce "slop" without human taste in the loop: "You can create code and run all night and then you have like the ultimate slop because what those agents don't really do yet is have taste." Peter is direct: raw capability without direction still produces mediocre output. "They are spiky smart and they're really good at things, but if you don't navigate them well, if you don't have a vision of what you're going to build, it's still going to be slop. If you don't ask the right questions, it's still going to be slop." Great AI-assisted work is defined by the human guiding it. Peter Steinberger 🦞 describes his own creative process when starting a new project: "When I start a project, I have like this very rough idea what it could be. And as I play with it and feel it, my vision gets more clear. I try out things, some things don't work, and I evolve my idea into what it will become." Most people skip this part entirely, front-loading everything into a single prompt and wondering why the result feels hollow. "My next prompt depends on what I see and feel and think about the current state of the project." Each step informs the next. The work itself is the feedback loop. "But if you try to put everything into a spec up front, you miss this kind of human-machine loop. And then I don't know how something good can come out without having feelings in the loop — almost like taste." The agentic trap is what happens when you remove yourself from the process too early.
