BTW! Every product team should study the pinky decision. Cutting the feature everyone expects is harder than adding six new ones.

Word of the day: Proprioception is your body's unconscious ability to sense its own position, movement, and force in space without relying on your vision.

Dropping the pinky is the smartest call on this list. Most teams would have kept it just because humans have five fingers.

Dropping the pinky to gain simplicity, strength, and reliability is such an interesting tradeoff. Been following you and @mikekennedy39 for a while—you both keep the coolest AI and robotics stuff on my radar.

Sharpa Robotics just dropped a new hand video and the level keeps going up. This is the Sharpa Wave running WM Craftnet on a human scale fivefinger hand with 22 active DoF. The policy combines wrist depth, tactile sensing, proprioception and previous actions. The hand can rotate different objects in-hand, recover after external pushes and continue manipulating objects it was never trained on. The numbers are strong. 175/200 successful real-world rotation trials across 20 objects. A world-model prior trained on 9 objects was transferred to 49 new objects. Fall rate went from 6% to 0.3%. The Wave hardware itself has 22 actuators, up to 20 N fingertip force, 240×240 tactile sensing at up to 180 fps and 0.02 N pressure sensitivity. What caught my attention is the recovery behavior. The fingers keep changing contact points after the object slips or gets pushed instead of replaying the same finger motion. That is the kind of dexterity I want to see more of in robotic hands. According to Sharpa’s current specifications: • DTA tactile sensors on the fingers with a resolution of up to 240 × 240 • Pressure detection • Slip detection • Force change detection • Contact point localization • 6-axis force and torque measurement: Fx, Fy, Fz, Mx, My, Mz • Tactile sensing at up to 180 fps • 20 ms reported latency • Force detection range from 0 to 30 N • Maximum sensor load of 50 N • Sharpa also describes a miniature camera integrated into each fingertip for visuo-tactile sensing.

A stunning piece of engineering!! 1X unveils the new humanoid hand for NEO - 25 degrees of freedom: 22 fully actuated in the fingers and palm, plus 3 at the wrist. - The DoF are distributed anatomically rather than evenly, deliberately biased toward a thumb that genuinely opposes the fingers. - In-house tendon-driven, quasi-direct-drive running low gear ratios of ~5:1 to 15:1 vs the typical 100:1–200:1. - Motors live in the forearm and pull tendons through the wrist. This keeps the hand light and its inertia low while producing high forces. Sensing - All 25 DoF are natively force-controlled and fully backdrivable. Every joint doubles as a force sensor. - Very important, closed-loop proprioception: it always knows its own pose and effort without looking. - Tactile skin across the fingertips and surfaces measuring contact and shear. This helps with adaptive gripping in real time. Safety and durability - IP68 waterproof and food-safe, so it can wash its own hands. - Compliant by construction: the low gear ratios, tendon drive, and low distal inertia let external impacts safely backdrive the fingers. It yields when hit by a hammer or caught in a drawer. - Full finger assemblies validated to millions of cycles. Manufacturing - Deep vertical integration: in-house motors, custom electronics, and tendon systems. - Hundreds built already, with capacity to produce 10,000 hands this year. NEWS: Figure has unveiling its 3rd generation humanoid robot. • Features a completely redesigned sensory suite and hand system. Wireless charging in feet. • Next-generation vision system engineered for high-frequency visuomotor control. Its new camera architecture delivers twice the frame rate, one-quarter the latency, and a 60% wider field of view per camera within a more compact form factor • Soft goods, wireless charging, improved audio system for voice reasoning, and battery safety advancements • "Engineered from the ground-up for high-volume manufacturing. In order to scale, we established a new supply chain and entirely new process for manufacturing humanoid robots at BotQ." • Lower manufacturing cost • Softer, more adaptive fingertips increase surface contact area, enabling more stable grasps across objects of varied shapes and sizes. Each fingertip sensor can detect forces as small as three grams of pressure - sensitive enough to register the weight of a paperclip resting on your finger. • Multi-density foam to protect against pinch points, and is covered in soft textiles rather than hard machined parts. 9% less mass and less volume than Figure 02 • 10 Gbps mmWave data offload capability, allowing the entire fleet to upload terabytes of data • Upgraded audio hardware system for better real time speech-to-speech. Its speaker is twice the size and nearly four times more powerful, while the microphone has been repositioned for improved performance and clarity. • Charging coils in the robot’s feet allow it to simply step onto a wireless stand and charge at 2 kW Figure: "BotQ is Figure’s dedicated manufacturing facility designed to scale robot production. BotQ’s first-generation manufacturing line will initially be capable of producing up to 12,000 humanoid robots per year, with the goal of producing a total of 100,000 robots over the next four years. Instead of relying on contract manufacturers, Figure brought production of its most critical systems in-house to maintain tight control over quality, iteration, and speed."

Boston Dynamics just dropped the production-ready Atlas at CES 2026, and the specs are next-level. This isn't just a prototype; it's a rugged, enterprise-grade worker built for the grind of real-world factories.🤖🦾 With 56 degrees of freedom and fully rotational joints, Atlas moves with "superhuman" flexibility. It features human-scale hands with tactile sensing in every finger and palm, allowing for high-precision manipulation. Plus, its 360-degree vision system ensures it always knows who's approaching, keeping human-robot collaboration safe. ➤ Rugged Performance: Lifts up to 110 lbs (approx. 50kg) and operates in extreme temps from -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C). It’s even water-resistant for industrial wash-downs. ➤ Smart Endurance: Runs for 4 hours on dual swappable batteries. When power gets low, it autonomously heads back to the station to swap its own batteries and get right back to work. ➤ Cloud Intelligence: New tasks can be trained in less than a day. Thanks to the Orbit platform, once one Atlas learns a skill, it’s instantly shared across the entire fleet. The scale is massive: the entire 2026 supply is already spoken for by Hyundai and a new AI partner. Hyundai is also building a specialized "Robotics Metal Plant" and a new factory capable of churning out 30,000 Atlas units annually. We’re officially watching the birth of a humanoid workforce at scale. Source: Boston Dynamics & Hyundai Group

NEWS: Humanoid robotics company Figure has released Helix 02, what they claim in their most capable humanoid model yet. "A single neural system that controls the full body directly from pixels, enabling dexterous, long horizon autonomy across an entire room: • Autonomous, long‑horizon loco-manipulation: Helix 02 unloads and reloads a dishwasher across a full-sized kitchen - a four-minute, end-to-end autonomous task that integrates walking, manipulation, and balance with no resets and no human intervention. We believe this is the longest horizon, most complex task completed autonomously by a humanoid robot to date. • All sensors in. All actuators out: Helix 02 connects every onboard sensor - vision, touch, and proprioception - directly to every actuator through a single unified visuomotor neural network. • Human-like whole body control from human data: All results are enabled by System 0, a learned whole‑body controller trained on over 1,000 hours of human motion data and sim‑to‑real reinforcement learning. System 0 replaces 109,504 lines of hand‑engineered C++ with a single neural prior for stable, natural motion. • New classes of dexterity: With Figure 03’s embedded tactile sensing and palm cameras, Helix 02 performs manipulation that was previously out of reach: extracting individual pills, dispensing precise syringe volumes, and singulating small, irregular objects from clutter despite self‑occlusion. Helix 02 is trained on over 1,000 hours of human motion data and integrates vision, touch, and proprioception."

New "superman" Four months later, Shanghai-based Matrix Robotics unveiled the Matrix-3--yet another anthropomorphic humanoid robot situated on the left side of the "Uncanny Valley." Unlike Boston Dynamics' Atlas, which is designed for industrial settings, the Matrix-3 is a general-purpose humanoid robot intended initially for service-oriented environments such as supermarkets, hotels, and office buildings. Standing 1.7 meters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, the adult-sized robot features a full-body covering of biomimetic fabric integrated with tactile sensors, as well as humanoid biomimetic muscles. It employs linear joints rather than the mainstream rotary joints. Matrix claims it is capable of pulling or pushing a load of 200 kg. Optimus makes extensive use of linear joints (linear actuators). It is equipped with dexterous hands offering 27 DOF and boasts a battery life of 4 hours. The robot is powered by a model named WAVE(like an E2E World Action Model) Matrix states that it has already established a manufacturing facility in Shanghai's Zhangjiang with an annual production capacity of 10,000 units. The company plans to deliver 1,000 units this year, with the first batch scheduled for delivery by the end of June. Pricing starts at $99,000. Notably, Matrix founder Zhang Haixing previously served as a leader at Tesla China's Design and Research Center, where he was deeply involved in the early-stage R&D and design of the Optimus robot. This company seems to be delivering on the future envisioned for Optimus.

A robotic hand that walks away on its own fingers! 🪬 We finally have the Thing from Addams family in robotics, and it was developed at ETH Zürich. No wheels, no legs bolted underneath, no separate drive mechanism. The same fingers that grasp things also carry the hand across a surface and hold up its weight. A quadruped has four identical legs spaced evenly around its body, and most legged-locomotion reward functions quietly assume exactly that. A hand has fingers of different lengths, arranged unevenly around a palm, with a thumb that matches none of them. The team wrote a reward formulation for that unequal geometry, and in simulation it moves faster than tuned rewards borrowed from quadruped work. They kept the hand's existing finger design and its position controller, so this isn't a bespoke machine built for the demo. And power and computation sit onboard, so it runs untethered. → Crawling, steering, and recovery after being knocked over → While holding itself up, it executes a sequence of keyboard commands with no vision at all → It pushes an object to target positions using overhead visual feedback → The simulator was calibrated against measurements taken from the physical hardware A hand that walks to a task and then performs the task is a mobile manipulator with no locomotion hardware in it. Big shoutout to authors Amir Kzp! 😮‍💨 🔗 Here's the paper: ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news →
