Deep ocean currents store and transport vast amounts of heat and carbon around the world, and support marine life by returning nutrient-rich water from the depths back up to the surface. This study shows meltwater from Antarctic ice will slow the circulation of deep ocean water in the region by about 40% by 2050, altering the ocean's overturning of heat, freshwater, oxygen, carbon and nutrients, with impacts felt throughout the global ocean for centuries to come. #deepoceancurrents #oceanography Co-authors: Steve Rintoul AO FAA, @_Qian_Li_ @dr_akmorrison @hogg_andy @ProfMattEngland @UNSW, @ANUmedia, @CSIRO , @MIT, @ClimateExtremes, @Nature

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Thank you so much for this excellent video. It is distressing to think that most people will move on to the next news cycle in a few days. On the flip side, my 17yo son is considering a career in Oceanography. I look forward to showing him this and the paper.

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Excellent video explaining how climate change affects ocean currents and why it matters.

@Nature @ProfMattEngland “We have 50 years of environmental ‘experts’ predicting catastrophes. We're going to run out of resources. Pollution is going to overwhelm us. Global cooling is going to kill us. Global warming is going to kill us. None of these have happened.”

@Berekade @Nature @ProfMattEngland I hope the Academy speaks out !!

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Thanks for this very concerning research.

@Nature @ProfMattEngland wow

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Volcanoes under the Antarctic ice shelf?

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Hi! Great video. Is this classified as a feedback loop?

@Nature @ProfMattEngland Brilliant video and explanation. Also read about it on ABC. Everyone needs to watch this.
