Two years after the assassination attempt against President Trump in Butler, a new inspector general report is exposing just how catastrophic the security failures really were. According to the report, the Secret Service missed more than 100 radio transmissions from local law enforcement about the suspected gunman and received only a handful of calls and texts warning of the threat before the attack. While I personally cannot wait for the meltdown when the ACLU of Maine declines to turn this into the First Amendment case of the century, the Amanda McGonigle saga continues. McGonigle runs an anti-JD Vance account with 1.7 million followers. After being denied entry to his Maine event, she is now threatening to sue Vance, the Office of the VP, the Secret Service, or whoever the legal theory eventually lands on. In Wood v. Moss, the Supreme Court gave Secret Service agents broad latitude when making security calls around protected officials. And we are barely weeks removed from an assassination attempt on President Trump at an event where Vance was also present. So when McGonigle shows up after openly fundraising for bail support, the headline is not “First Amendment crisis.” It is “Secret Service does the obvious Secret Service thing.”
