BREAKING: ERCOT recommends that #bitcoin mining in Texas should be directly integrated as a Controllable Load Resource (CLR) to increase reliable grid balancing

Energy producers are bitcoin miners, they are only just now waking up to this fact.

I wonder how this would impact my company and similar companies that mine off of flare gas. Very remote, nowhere near the grid, and obviously not close to a pipeline.

Can someone ELI5? What does CLR mean exactly — i.e. who does the "controlling" of the load? And why isn't all of bitcoin mining considered to be a CLR already?

It means that the grid operator, ERCOT, would send MW “basepoints” to the load operator, telling them to ramp up or down to target a certain MW. The basepoints are the result of basically an orderbook clearing mechanism, every 5 minutes. Normally it’s only generators that participate, so a bitcoin mining would become like a power plant by being a CLR. Currently bitcoin miners outside of CLR have complete discretion over when and how to ramp up or down the load, it’s the default of an electricity user. There’s a qualifying process to prove you can follow basepoints, and there may be patent issues that could be affecting adoption.

what legal issues is he referring to for the tools they need to expand CLR to the rest of the bitcoin mining operators?

An Ameren Electric exec recently spoke to this benefit as well out at the BTC Expedition Exhibit in Jefferson City, Mo. Load balancing is a big budget saver to power companies.
