@Pioneer__Labs @erika_alden_d I don't understand what it means for the bacteria to be able to "live on Mars", if it didn't have to survive any of the Mars atmospheric conditions. It seems more like "bacteria that can live off a feedstock we expect to be cheap on Mars", no?

Here's Elon Musk explaining how we could warm up Mars. “Nuking Mars, I was a little flippant about that. But I think it's a really decent idea. It's hard to convey in 30 seconds on The Late Show. The sun is a nuclear explosion, a fusion explosion. So if you wanted to add energy to Mars, to warm it up, the source of almost all energy in the universe is fusion. What I was really talking about is creating two little suns, two pulsing suns above the North and South Pole of Mars. That would warm the poles up enough so that the frozen CO2 would gasify and densify the atmosphere. Some of the water would also heat up, and you'd have more water vapor and CO2 in the Martian atmosphere, which in that case is good because the CO2 ends up warming Mars up. What matters is, can you get sufficient tonnage to Mars such that Mars can prosper on its own?” Everyone pictures the landing. The boots on red soil. The flag. Musk isn’t thinking about the landing. If you can't deliver millions of tons to Earth orbit, you can't get the millions of tons that you need to the Moon and Mars to make us a sustainably multi-planet species. Elon Musk: Even if civilization has just a 1% chance of being annihilated, we should back up the biosphere on another planet. “Sometimes people are puzzled as to why we're doing it. The reason we're doing it is to make life, consciousness, multiplanetary. So as to preserve the future of civilization and consciousness and life as we know it. There's always some chance of something going wrong on Earth. Overall, I'm like fairly optimistic about Earth. Let's just say there's a 1% chance, for argument's sake of life as we know it and consciousness being annihilated on Earth. I think it's still, even if there's just a 1% chance of civilizational annihilation, you'd want to protect against that by having a second planet back up the biosphere effectively and ensure the continuity of life and consciousness. This is the first time in the 4.5-billion-year history of Earth that it's been possible to do so. So we should take advantage of this window while it is still open. And you know, we don't want to be complacent and assume that there will be this constant upward trajectory of civilization. Hopefully that happens, but it might not. Elon Musk: Even if civilization has just a 1% chance of being annihilated, we should back up the biosphere on another planet. “Sometimes people are puzzled as to why we're doing it. The reason we're doing it is to make life, consciousness, multiplanetary. So as to preserve the future of civilization and consciousness and life as we know it. There's always some chance of something going wrong on Earth. Overall, I'm like fairly optimistic about Earth. Let's just say there's a 1% chance, for argument's sake of life as we know it and consciousness being annihilated on Earth. I think it's still, even if there's just a 1% chance of civilizational annihilation, you'd want to protect against that by having a second planet back up the biosphere effectively and ensure the continuity of life and consciousness. I think one of the main reasons he's so determined to go to Mars is because he believes ASI could very well mean the end of humanity. We won't be able to control it, so if it turns on us and we don't have a "seed bank" outside of its reach, we're done. But here’s the terrifying paradox: you need AI to get to Mars, build a colony, and keep you alive. And it would only take, at most, about 20 minutes for a signal traveling at lightspeed from Earth to reach Mars. That means a malicious data packet or rogue command sent by Earth’s ASI would hit the Martian colony in under an hour. The only way the colony would actually work as an ark for humanity is if it completely severs all communication with Earth. It's terrifying, but overcoming terrifying situations is what mankind does best.
