I’ve always wanted to meet her for so long and it just made me so upset that I went into the ring and she gave me her gloves as well… it’s just so sweet that I got picked out.” Taylor said the look on Clodagh’s face, and the sight of so many other young girls in the crowd, meant more than any world championship. “That’s the greatest part, to see so many little girls here and imagining all the thousands of stories of those little girls in the stadium on Saturday night who might be at a boxing event for the very first time,” she said. “I’m hoping that these little girls actually fall in love with this beautiful sport and surpass anything that I’ve ever achieved. It was the only time David and myself collaborated on anything, which is a real shame.” Mick Jagger, June 2025 LONDON, 10TH JUNE 2025 - 40 years ago today, Live Aid, the benefit concert organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise further funds for relief of the famine in Ethiopia, was announced with a press conference on the pitch at Wembley Stadium. The show was held simultaneously on Saturday, 13th July 1985, at Wembley and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. One of the day's highlights was the surprise duet of the Motown classic, 'Dancing In The Street', between David Bowie and Mick Jagger. The video for the track, which, like the song, had only been recorded and filmed in thirteen hours, only fourteen days earlier, was shown at 7 pm in the UK (2 pm in Philadelphia), just before Bowie took to the stage at Wembley Stadium. The single version of the song was released on 27th August, with all the proceeds benefiting famine relief. It topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and reached No. 7 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the track, a limited edition white vinyl 12" will be released on 29th August, 2 days after its anniversary, bringing together all of the song's mixes for the first time. 30% of the retail price from the sale of this single will be donated by David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Parlophone Records to The Band Aid Charitable Trust (Charity Number 292199). The original plan for Live Aid was to perform the track together live, with Bowie at Wembley Stadium and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It soon became apparent that the satellite link-up between the two countries would mean a half-second delay, rendering the plan impossible. Instead, the pair convened at Westside Studios in London on 29th June, where Bowie was working with producers Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley. The duo went directly from the studio to Spillers Millennium Mills in the East End to shoot the video with director David Mallet, who had previously worked with Bowie on the groundbreaking Ashes To Ashes video. The video has been upgraded to high resolution to celebrate the anniversary using the original film negative. Speaking about the song and video at the time, Bowie said “We thought about it on a Thursday night and we just went through a bunch of old songs and thought that ‘Dancing’ was one we both knew very well and then we went into the studio between 7 and 11 on Saturday night and then we went over to the Docklands and shot the video for the rest of the night so we did the whole thing in ten hours, it was great.” He also talked about the spirit of Live Aid, saying, “Everybody out there who sent money in, you’re the real heroes because it’s easy for me to go up there and sing some songs, but it’s much harder for you to give money and not be recognised. The show was held simultaneously on Saturday, 13th July 1985, at Wembley and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. One of the day's highlights was the surprise duet of the Motown classic, 'Dancing In The Street', between David Bowie and Mick Jagger. The video for the track, which, like the song, had only been recorded and filmed in thirteen hours, only fourteen days earlier, was shown at 7 pm in the UK (2 pm in Philadelphia), just before Bowie took to the stage at Wembley Stadium. The single version of the song was released on 27th August, with all the proceeds benefiting famine relief. It topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and reached No. 7 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the track, a limited edition white vinyl 12" will be released on 29th August, 2 days after its anniversary, bringing together all of the song's mixes for the first time. 30% of the retail price from the sale of this single will be donated by David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Parlophone Records to The Band Aid Charitable Trust (Charity Number 292199). The original plan for Live Aid was to perform the track together live, with Bowie at Wembley Stadium and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It soon became apparent that the satellite link-up between the two countries would mean a half-second delay, rendering the plan impossible. Instead, the pair convened at Westside Studios in London on 29th June, where Bowie was working with producers Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley. The duo went directly from the studio to Spillers Millennium Mills in the East End to shoot the video with director David Mallet, who had previously worked with Bowie on the groundbreaking Ashes To Ashes video. The video has been upgraded to high resolution to celebrate the anniversary using the original film negative. Speaking about the song and video at the time, Bowie said “We thought about it on a Thursday night and we just went through a bunch of old songs and thought that ‘Dancing’ was one we both knew very well and then we went into the studio between 7 and 11 on Saturday night and then we went over to the Docklands and shot the video for the rest of the night so we did the whole thing in ten hours, it was great.” He also talked about the spirit of Live Aid, saying, “Everybody out there who sent money in, you’re the real heroes because it’s easy for me to go up there and sing some songs, but it’s much harder for you to give money and not be recognised. Honestly, if I could have scripted it, I could not have imagined a more nail-biting storyline - tension building all night, and then that unbelievable release at the end. I have to admit: I was close to a heart attack. And then I cried tears of joy when Kristian Gkolomeev won the Men’s 50m Freestyle in 20.81s, setting a new world record. He takes home a $1,000,000 bonus, a $250,000 first-place prize - and reclaims the 50m Freestyle world record. Think about what a world record actually means. It means you are better at something than roughly 8 billion other people on this planet. Let that sink in. I know some people expected us to break (many) more world records tonight. But as always in science: baseline matters. Enhancements bring out the best in you - but they are not a magic bullet. Kristian was already one of the best clean swimmers in the world - and then he added the icing on the cake to reach entirely new heights. And needless to say: the air gets thinner at the very top. Especially in the shortest events, breaking a world record has become harder and harder over the decades. And then there is the unquantifiable magic of live sport. It does not matter how good you looked in training camp. It all comes down to that one moment. A few athletes who were world-record contenders had injuries today. Others had stage fright. That is real sport. We have many more years ahead of us to break world records - one by one - and we will. We are just getting started. But world records are not even my favorite part. When I rewatched Bilbo’s birthday party scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there was one very brief moment that made me pause for quite a while: Gandalf’s dragon-shaped firework. I found myself wondering: Why does a dragon — a symbol of a world of adventure and danger — appear in the Shire in the form of a joke? At first glance, it is simply a very Gandalf-like fireworks display. Merry and Pippin mischievously send the dragon firework flying across the sky. The crowd of dancing Hobbits immediately panics and drops to the ground. Then the dragon explodes into a spectacular burst of fireworks, leaving Merry and Pippin’s faces covered in soot. I laughed. But the more I watched it, the more I felt that there was something very special about the humor in this moment. Because the dragon appears in a place where it seems completely out of place. The Shire is a world of parties, gardens, little homes, meals, and very ordinary pleasures. The Hobbits live lives almost completely removed from the great upheavals of the outside world. Dragons, however, belong to an entirely different world. They evoke distant lands, adventures, treasures, battles, and dangers that an ordinary Hobbit would never want to encounter. And yet Peter Jackson places that image right in the middle of a birthday celebration. But he does not show us a real dragon. He shows us a dragon made of fireworks. That is what makes this scene so interesting to me. Something frightening has been transformed into entertainment. A creature belonging to stories of adventure appears in the Shire, only to make everyone panic for a few seconds before they laugh again. The outside world has touched the Shire, but it has not truly entered yet. And Bilbo’s reaction makes me pay even closer attention. While everyone around him reacts with surprise to the dragon, Bilbo receives it with a very unusual calmness. He says: “There hasn’t been a dragon in these parts for a thousand years.” The line sounds very funny. But when I think about Bilbo’s life, I see another layer to it. The Hobbits around him know dragons only as things from distant stories. Bilbo, however, has actually stepped into that world. I am reminded again of Thrór’s map in Bag End, which preserves the traces of the journey to Erebor and the image of the dragon connected to Bilbo’s story. So when I see the dragon appear over the Shire, I cannot help but connect it with that past. In Bag End, the world of adventure lies on a map. At the party, it flies across the sky in the form of a firework. And in Bilbo’s life, that world was once real. From map to fireworks, from memory to amusement. Because it shows that Bilbo is living between two worlds. One is the Shire — where he can celebrate his birthday, drink, eat, and live peaceful days. The other is the world he once entered, a world of journeys and things that most Hobbits know only through stories. And then Gandalf appears. I really like the way the film ends this moment. Not with anything grand. There is no warning. No triumphant music. Gandalf simply walks over, grabs Merry and Pippin by the ears, and scolds the two troublemakers with an expression that is both stern and funny. A dragon has just flown across the sky. But in the end, everything returns to the laughter of a birthday party. And that is what makes me think even more deeply about the Shire. Perhaps this is how the film shows us the distance between two worlds. The world of adventure is already there, but to the Hobbits, it is still only a bit of fun. They can see the dragon. They can be frightened. But a few seconds later, the dragon turns into fireworks, and life goes on. We, the viewers, know something they do not. That this world will not remain fireworks forever.
