Not as secure as using ASTM bolts. Rivets don't provide good plate to plate contact.

@LynneBP_294 You cannot weld a bridge, too much expansion and contraction due to temperature I will simply crack/break

It’s the same method they used in ships. Some rivets were wrought iron some pure steel. This was the case on the Titanic. They used steel rivets around the mid section plates but wrought iron rivets at the bow and stern end. The wrought iron rivets are weaker.

Important: Always wear safety sandals.

An Age old process relying on the contraction on cooling to provide exceptionally tight connection. But, remember, the Titanic was built with steel plate and rivets! The men who built her would mainly have peened the rivet by hand whilst someone held a sledge against the outside.
