I wanna say the style began to get stale in 2001. And it became a rotting corpse in 2003. 1994 - 1997: a slow burgeoning rise confined to the clubs... 1997 - 2000: the golden age. 1997 is when the style began to get explode. 1999-2000 was when it went mainstream.

2001 - 2003: the decline. In 2001, too many of the bands began to get poppy and sounded more like hard rock trying to be edgy. By 2003, it was dead, dull, and over...and people were ready for the heavier stuff again, which was itself beginning to come up.
