The trouble with politics now is you've got too many people thinking that they keep office by spending more taxpayers' money in their own constituency or by agreeing to any good cause. They never look at the total. If you have a total that goes on increasing, you're going to get your taxation going on increasing. If you get your taxation going on increasing, people lose all incentive and the whole economy comes down. That's what had happened when I went into office. The top rate of tax on earned income was 83%. We actually collected far less tax at 83% from the top people than when we moved it down to 40%. People at last had incentive.
