That was me the first time a girl held my hand who wasn't a relative.

I raised grey squirrels for years. They nest during hurricane season, so there were always babies on the ground when trees went down. They're very loving, normally.

These "wild" animals have never felt the touch of a loving human or mate for that matter. Life in the wild is not cuddling up to watch TV shows. Life in the wild is constantly testing each other to see if your mate can survive an attack or some other catastrophy.

He just wants food and is surprised that he isn't getting any.

Perhaps, like a cat kneading a blanket or soft cushion the critter has a flashback of the one time in its life it felt a 'loving' connection to another being: its mother. Maybe she used to groom him him like that when he was a youngster. For a fleeting moment, that little guy is transported back in time to see his mother.
