This claim is absolute nonsense. Dogs do not consume 6bn animals a year that figure conflates by-products and waste streams with whole animals “slaughtered for pets”. Most meat in dog food is offal, trimmings & co-products humans don’t eat. If dogs went vegan, those animals would still be slaughtered the waste would just be dumped. Dogs didn’t “take food from people”. Industrial farming, trade policy & inequality did. Blaming dogs is a distraction from real food-system failures. Also missing from this claim: land reality. Around 60% of global farmland is grassland that cannot grow crops for humans. It can only produce grass which ruminants convert into food. You don’t “free up” that land by banning animals. You just abandon it or rewild it. Livestock ≠ stealing plant food from people. 👉Bad trade policy and inequality do that.

@ChrisGPackham I find it hard to understand how Chris can speak about humans interfering with the natural world, while here he is, interfering with nature. Dogs are carnivores by nature. Both mine are raw fed and have great skin, teeth & digestion & loads of energy.

@ChrisGPackham I often feed my dogs whole fish, as well as a feather and fur diets, they thrive on it. They like the occasional carrot, however they will never pick that before a trout, rabbit or pheasant. To remove their choice based on your own feeding habits is fundamentally wrong.
