BTS will not be submitting their music for consideration at next year's Grammy Awards in an apparent protest against the Recording Academy’s decision to introduce a separate new “Asian Pop” category, prompting the academy’s CEO Harvey Mason Jr. to defend the new category.

Sounds like a slap in the face! Are they trying to rig the awards? I don’t know this group, I’m too old, but good for them for standing up to what’s so wrong. I’m going to checkout their music.

Proud of bts for standing for what’s right. The grammys can fk itself. Segregating groups as soon as there’s an outlier is their m.o. 😒😒😒

The Grammys for decades has been disrespecting artists by creating sub categories that literally segregated artists , they have been telling people okay we see you but you can't seat at the main table, but you can enter and sit in the back . What the Recording Academy has been +

Can’t wait for the academy to create categories for each country instead 😂 wow that’s inclusivity right? Well that’s how their CEO stated. He wanted more artists to be recognized so might as well create for each country 😉

Singling out artists under an ethnicity such as Asian Pop segregates them and reeks of racism. The worst is the timing AFTER the overwhelming success of the #BTS_ARİRANG album in sales and streams. CEO Harvey Mason is accountable for his decision.

Walking away from a dream they had chased for years wasn’t losing. It was courage. They chose principles over a trophy. the Grammys lost. BTS walked away with something far more valuable: their integrity, the respect of millions, and a legacy no award can ever define.

If the RA pubclicly shames artists for rightfully declining a dillema they didnt create and forcing them to validate a category that compromises their principles, isnt the problem the institution that created this rather than the artists forced to make a choice?

Harry wasn’t defending a new category, he was defending institutionalised racisim within the Grammys. When POC artists repeatedly reject the Grammys’ definition of “inclusion,” the answer is not to double down or play victim because their version of inclusion wasn’t met with gratitude. The answer is to listen and evolve to the people they claim to empower

Now add that the Grammy’s deleted BTS’s performances at the show in a petty retaliation to them deciding not to participate in 2027. It’s VERY telling & shows the lie in his official statement.

Refusing to submit over a category that actually recognizes the genre's distinctiveness seems like a missed opportunity. Doesn't a dedicated category give Asian pop artists a fairer shot at winning rather than competing in a crowded general field?

"That is the hardest blow to the Grammys, when one of the most influential artists in pop decides that it no longer needs their validation, prestige shifts elsewhere. The award no longer grants prestige. It raises the question of who can afford the luxury of rejecting it" 💅

[News] BTS has declared that they will not submit their music to next year's Grammy Awards. Stating that music should not be categorized by region and language, they delivered a sharp jab at the Grammys for recently creating a new Asian music category. All seven members of BTS posted simultaneous messages on their social media stating they would not be submitting their work to the Grammy Awards. They wrote that they hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being categorized by region or language. Previously, The Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards, established the "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category starting next year. They set criteria requiring the use of an Asian language in a meaningful way and for the music to be based in or recognized locally within Asia. Although they explained this as recognition of Asian Pop's growing influence in the global music industry, criticism arose that this move creates a barrier rather than expanding diversity. The criticism points out that it confines K-pop to "Asian Pop" rather than global pop music, effectively blocking K-pop stars from winning awards in the main categories. Even after sweeping the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards, BTS continued to knock on the door of the Grammys. Through hit songs like "Dynamite" and "Butter," they were nominated for three consecutive years starting in 2021, but ultimately failed to win. Fans voiced their support on the Grammys' official social media accounts, posting comments such as "BTS doesn't need to prove themselves through a Grammy Award". Kim Doheon (Pop Music Critic): "Through this declaration, I expect the controversy to intensify over what Asian Pop truly is and what issues Asian artists (submitting to the Grammys) are contemplating." Boasting one of the most powerful fandoms in the world, attention is focused on what changes BTS's decision will bring to the Western-centric music industry, including the Grammy Awards.
