“oscar even said on the radio after [japan], once we get going, this car's not so bad. do you share that feeling about it?” lando: “yeah, no 100%. oscar did a good job in japan.. i think that was what was impressive about oscar's drive in japan, was antonelli was about a second a lap quicker, and [oscar] could have won the race, he should have won the race, if it wasn't for the safety car. i mean we're also at the place where the safety car helped me win my first race, so you win some, you lose some in those situations. but yeah you can be a second off, like he was and he still should have won the race, but you still want a car that's quick enough to win outright. and that's what we're hoping for.”

Short post-race media scrum with Bubba Wallace. Frustrated and said they didn't have all the "pieces of the puzzle" on the last lap. Bubba thinks if he could've covered a little better once the 5 car running out of fuel changed things in the lead pack, but chalked it up to not being meant to be.

"why? just hard work from my engineers and from myself to improve me as a driver" 👏🏻👏🏻 🗣️: friday night did you think you had the car to win the race? and do you have an explanation of the difference of pace between you and oscar? lando: "no, i didn't think so. especially after fp1, i didn't. actually, andrea wanted to make a bet with me because i was pretty disappointed with the pace and how the car was handling in fp1. it got a bit better in fp2, but still the ferraris were just on another level. and i really didn't expect to get as close as we did in quali. but the wind changed from friday to saturday, and the saturday wind really suited our car a lot more. we had a lot more confidence in driving the car, so i could push more. and then i certainly felt like i could be on pole yesterday, and i felt like i could win a race today. i think today the race pace was much better than i was expecting. the degradation was much better than i was expecting too. but it was probably one of my best performances personally in terms of driving the car. the fact i can keep up with oscar on this kind of track, where it's impossible to follow, impossible to overtake, i was within eight tenths or something for 40 laps almost. the fact i could do this is what gave me confidence that i would win the race no matter what, whether he boxed early or late or whatever. the pace advantage i had was huge today. but i don't know why. the cars are identical. and i've just been feeling very, very strong lately. i've worked on many areas from last year. i feel much more confident lately with how to extract performance. and i worked a lot with my engineers to understand this car, because it's certainly not an easy car to understand and figure out on how to drive on the limit consistently. so why? just hard work from my engineers and from myself to improve me as a driver and improve my driving. and that is the answer"

lando said he agrees with most of max’s comments about the new cars, but emphasized that he still enjoys driving and didn’t want to come out and complain on the first weekend back: “is it still a challenge and good fun out there? yeah. i'm certainly not gonna change my job for anything else. i still have fun and it's still the job that i love to do. but it's certainly very different. is it as pure and as beautiful to drive as last year or look as incredible? yeah, definitely not. and i agree with max on a lot of comments. probably most of the comments i agree with, but it's not that i don't have fun out there, you know. so there's two sides. i do agree with basically every other driver, because i think every other driver's made their comments pretty clear. i just didn't want to come out to the media and complain to everyone on the first weekend back. i want to still enjoy my time and just say what i feel, but i had fun last week. i've still been having fun out there now”
