Drummer Buddy Rich died after surgery in 1987. As he was being prepped for surgery, a nurse asked him, “Is there anything you can't take?” Rich replied, “Yeah, country music.”

He played the chairs one night on Carson..he was in Kansas City the next month and talked about being on Carson. My parents had taken my brother to see him and my mother yelled out , next time Don't play the chairs. He responds Lady I played the hell out of those chairs

There was only one Buddy Rich created by God! Only Buddy could turn the shell of the drum into a drum + his left hand was faster than most drummers right and left hands. Heard that he gave a drum kit to Johnny Carson who took to it quite well!

See when people put guys like Pert at the top they don’t know what that are talking about it’s guys like Rich and Krupa who were the best of the best as drummers.

Everyone has their favorite drummer and Buddy's always been mine. Got his autograph when I was a kid. He had a reputation for being a little ornery, but he was always supercool to children, and there is no better judge of a man's character than that.

I was fortunate to watch him perform with his big band, twice, when I was in high school. Legend.
