In a career lasting over 80 years, he played swing, bebop, jazz fusion, and avant-garde jazz. He is considered to have been a pioneer of jazz drumming… In this clip we see him performing a drum solo alongside the Stan Getz Quartet in 1966.

Remembering the great Papa Jo Jones who was born on this day in 1911. One of the most influential of all jazz drummers, noted for his swing, dynamic subtlety, and finesse, Jones was one of the first drummers to promote the use of brushes on drums, and shifting the role of timekeeping from the bass drum to the hi-hat cymbal. In an era when extroverted showmanship was admired among drummers, Jones seldom chose to solo; he was adept at dynamic shadings, and his mastery of playing drums with brushes was widely admired. He had a major influence on later drummers such as Buddy Rich, Kenny Clarke, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, and Louie Bellson. In addition to his artistry on the drums, Jones was known for his irascible, combative temperament. One famous instance of his irritable temper was in the spring of 1936, during a jam session at the Reno Club in Kansas City. A young Charlie Parker was attempting to play an improvised solo, but lost track of the chord changes; as a sign of contempt, Jones threw a cymbal from his drum kit onto the floor near Parker's feet to get him to leave the stage. Here, he is performing with organist Milt Buckner on L’Aventure du Jazz in 1972.
