[WATCH] The ANC over the years, we have lost ground because we became too comfortable, too factionalised and too distant from the people we serve. Over the years, a culture of materialism crept into our movement, and we failed to arrest it before it took root. Comrades became preoccupied with positions, status and material possessions instead of service to the people. Our communities have become frustrated. They accuse us of corruption. They say the ANC has become a home for thieves. We must confront that reality honestly. We must be firm. We must be decisive in the fight against corruption. There can be no room for those who use the movement for personal enrichment. We must restore the integrity and values of the African National Congress. Comrades, it is the volunteers on the ground who continue to carry this movement, and the overwhelming majority of them are women. Thousands upon thousands of volunteers are campaigning every day for the African National Congress. Women are the backbone of our ground campaign. Elderly women, mothers and grandmothers are going door to door, mobilising communities and ensuring that our movement remains rooted among the people. They deserve recognition. But even as the war continues, Russia is rearming and reconstituting its armed forces and industrial base. Even in the event of a peace deal in Ukraine—which we are all working hard to achieve—Russia’s rearmament would likely only accelerate. The wider danger to Europe would not end there; it would increase. So we must respond to this threat in full.

And sometimes, that is enough. 🙏🏻❤️ While our politicians turn a blind eye to the suffering of our own people, British homeless men and women are sleeping rough on freezing streets this winter. We aren’t rich, we aren’t powerful but we have heart. And with that heart, we are doing everything we can, serving hot meals, handing out blankets, and reminding them that they are not forgotten.
