The sanitation guards popularly known as "Tankas" were brought back to help keep our communities clean and enforce sanitation laws. They started with GHS 70 a month in 2008. In 2012, it increased to just GHS 100 - and many say they were hardly paid at all. Unable to survive on such meagre and irregular allowances, many abandoned the job. Yet in 2022, Zoomlion received more than GHS 37 million to manage and pay the sanitation guards. Today, clogged drains, choked gutters and devastating floods have become a familiar sight across Ghana.

With a heart weighed down by sorrow, I have received official confirmation from the family of Charles Kwadwo Fosu, confirming the passing of our beloved Daddy Lumba. This is more than a personal loss; it’s an irreplaceable wound to the very soul of Ghana. He was the voice of the Ghanaian story. In our moments of joy, his music lifted us. In our seasons of pain, his songs wept with us, giving words to emotions we couldn’t express. He gifted our beloved party the NPP an anthem of hope, yet always remained a son of Ghana first. For a generation, he was our soundtrack. Today, his own words from "Makra Mo" pierce our hearts: "Farewell, perhaps this is the last time you’ll see me."
