For all those thinking 20K feet per minute will tear the wings off, you do realize that a C-17 flying straight and level at 600 MPH is flying at 52.8K feet per minute...

That's only achievable with the thrust reversers deployed mid flight

Throw all the drag devices out, pull the power back, shove the nose over and pitch for Vso. You’ll be surprised just how fast you can come down even in a light single. Won’t be 20k fpm but… For mo’ fun, add a sideslip. Of course being pressurized makes things far easier.

Wow scary stuff. The planes wings must be under some serious stresses. When diving, how do they ensure they don't overspeed isn't overspeeding dangerous ie breaking sound barrier.. are these planes capable of that.

Uhmm @CWLemoine how?? My lame brain looks at this expecting the engines unable to keep up with the air flow and producing some sort of drag that rips the wings clean off. The whole plane is shaking! Yikes!

Not that bad, even when you’re strapped into a busted ass old airline seats bolted Lima pallets with a couple hundred of your closest friends to make a night landing in Al Taqqadam.

20K. 20K of what? Feet? I experienced a 10,000 ft/min simulated emergency descent in a Morane Saulnier 760 in the 70's. Why would a C17 need the capability of more? 🤔
