And that’s what they’re doing. So, if you essentially fire the entire staff, or 80% of the staff, of Social Security, and somebody needs to get a Social Security card, they’re not going to be able to get it in a timely way. If you fire everybody who’s doing hurricane watch, you’re not going to have hurricane watch… The same is true in terms of education. If you fire everybody, or you make it unfeasible for it to work, then none of the laws that are supposed to be effectuated by the department will work. So, if Title I is supposed to go to a high school in Staten Island, and they’re supposed to get $5 million that goes there, and all of a sudden it doesn’t, and they don’t have the money, then that means the programs go away. That means the reading programs, the computer programs, the after-school programs—all the programs that are funded by Title I, and every schoolteacher in America understands what that means—they go away. The same goes for the programs for kids with disabilities under IDEA. Here is the most important number in this entire update and the one the government said the least about. Debt service costs: $54 billion this year. Projected to exceed $80 billion by 2030. The fastest-growing line item in the federal budget. Four years ago, interest on the debt consumed 6 cents of every tax dollar. By 2030, it will consume 13. Every one of those cents is money that does not go to hospitals, housing, or highways. It goes to bondholders. There is no credible plan in this document to arrest that trajectory.

Freezing temperatures and snow are here in NYC, and the Guardian Angels are out every day and night doing homeless outreach across our streets and subways. What we’re seeing is a humanitarian crisis that continues to be ignored year after year. The Angels are providing meals, water, gloves, jackets, and handwarmers, and helping connect people to shelters. Too often those shelters are packed or unsafe, forcing many to sleep on the streets or in the subways. That’s the reality. While many of us are warm, too many are struggling just to survive. Philadelphians cannot ignore the reality of homelessness on our streets. We cannot walk past it, accept it, or pretend it will solve itself. Our plan is focused on helping people get off the street and stay off by expanding homeless outreach through shelter access and more. Our proposed hotel tax increase would generate $20 million each year to support Homeless Services efforts, while adding about $4 to a $200 hotel room night. Because every Philadelphian deserves a city that is cleaner, safer, and rooted in dignity for all.
