Famous and absolutely majestic emperor 👑🐧 stopped by the Vernadsky base. Emperor penguins prefer the colder reaches of Antarctica, and the nearest colony is more than 300 km from our station. So every visit is a special event. “We were returning by boat after ocean work when our colleague Liza suddenly shouted: ‘A penguin, a penguin!’ At first we didn’t understand why she was so excited — we have thousands of gentoo penguins nesting here. And then we realized… :)” recalls biologist Vladyslav Khreshcheniuk. The young visitor (recognizable by the gray patches on its head) stayed only briefly, disappearing by the next morning.
