The traditionnal jackets of the gardians in Camargue have been of black velvet with a black piping for over a century. They wear it to all sorts of traditionnal ceremonies but in many other occasions. Variants in colors such as brown have existed for a very long time. Since gardians are basically the cow boys of Camargue, I guess that gives an idea on how to do casual with a velvet jacket

@urban_comp Alan Flusser promoted the brown velvet jacket as a travel and city staple look 25 years ago. As he said, it is ideal to wear around town for lunch or a museum visit with jeans or with grey flannels and a tie for evening.

@urban_comp evening wear is often considered a bit more formal than day wear. such a tuxedo versus a business suit. in traditional tailoring, we typically associate velvet with evening wear.

@urban_comp I think so. I’ve got a midnight blue one that I’ve paired with Chelsea boots, jeans, shirt and scarf for a non-formal winter night out with friends.
