Ketogenic diets in the ICU? The research is beginning to explore it. In a randomized controlled trial of 40 patients with sepsis, investigators tested a medically supervised ketogenic diet during critical illness. All patients in the ketogenic group achieved stable nutritional ketosis, with no serious adverse events attributed to the intervention. After day four, none of the ketogenic patients required insulin — compared to 35–60% of patients in the control group on any given day. The ketogenic group also experienced: • More ventilator-free days • More vasopressor-free days • More dialysis-free days • More ICU-free days Researchers observed signals consistent with reduced immune dysregulation and lower inflammatory signaling — a meaningful finding in a condition defined by metabolic chaos and systemic inflammation. This was a small, early-phase trial. It does not establish standard of care. But it adds to a growing body of evidence that metabolic therapy may have applications beyond chronic disease — including critical care. Today we’re releasing V-JEPA, a method for teaching machines to understand and model the physical world by watching videos. This work is another important step towards Yann LeCun’s outlined vision of AI models that use a learned understanding of the world to plan, reason and accomplish complex tasks. Details ➡️ We're releasing a collection of V-JEPA vision models trained with a feature prediction objective using self-supervised learning. The models are able to understand and predict what is going on in a video, even with limited information. It learns by predicting missing or obscured parts of a video in its internal feature space. Unlike generative approaches that fill in missing pixels, this flexible approach enables up to 6x improvements in training and sample efficiency. The models were pre-trained on entirely unlabeled data, and a small amount of labeled data can be used to train a task-specific prediction head on top after pre-training. Our results show that, using a frozen backbone, our top V-JEPA models achieve 82.0% on Kinetics-400, 72.2% on Something-Something-v2 and 77.9% on ImageNet1K — competitive with or exceeding previous leading video models. We believe that this work is an important milestone on the path to advancing machine intelligence.

We are excited to be working on a new research study which is aiming to create a lateral flow test (LFT) to determine whether a patient is suffering a stroke. We are working alongside the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham on the Ghost study, which will see us obtain saliva from patients who are demonstrating stroke symptoms, to help create an LFT which in turn will help to speed up access to brain-saving treatment and saving more patients. We are preparing for new areas of cooperation with partners, such as those on drones, in order to increase our capabilities in using drones, countering Russian ones, and strengthening our electronic warfare. I also held a meeting on security guarantees, which is one of our key priorities. The related bilateral work with partners is ongoing. Today, we outlined the results we can attain in the near future.

Breakthrough Update: Today, Vertex announced that they are beginning their Phase 3, or pivotal trial for VX-880, a stem cell-derived islet therapy. A pivotal trial gathers the data required for an FDA submission. This therapy is for people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and hypoglycemia unawareness and severe hypoglycemic episodes. This is a HUGE first for the #T1D community as it is the first time a scalable cure for some people with T1D is entering this phase. Breakthrough T1D and the T1D Fund are incredibly proud to have supported this work in cell therapies—a top priority for our organization.
