Myth Busters did this years ago. You're pretty much safe from a normal bullet at 2 feet depth. The 50 cal will probably concuss you but you'll still be safe from getting shot.

Newton's 2nd law (F=ma) + fluid drag. Water is ~800x denser than air, so the bullet slams into massive resistance (drag force ~½ρv²CdA). That huge opposing force decelerates it insanely fast, turning kinetic energy into heat, turbulence, and cavitation bubbles. Most rounds (9mm to AK-47) stop in a few feet. 50 BMG? Still slows hard but packs more punch. Water wins for typical guns.

For the tank in that vid: 9mm stops in ~2-4 ft of water. AR-15/AK-47 rounds break up in 3-6 ft. .50 BMG slows hard but needs 6-10+ ft to be non-lethal (varies by angle/velocity). Water vests aren't a thing cuz water's super heavy (~8 lbs/gallon), it'd leak/slosh, weigh you down like a backpack full of bricks, and plain H2O doesn't mushroom bullets like Kevlar or plates do. Real liquid armor uses special non-Newtonian fluids in the fabric instead.

You have to use subsonic if you want better penetration through water. Subsonic will push a pressure wave ahead of the bullet which will break the surface tension of the fluid before the bullet hits and will prevent the bullet from fragmenting

My Dad was strafed by Japanese airplanes while swimming from the USS Utah. He wasn’t hit but he sure thought it was scary

60 years ago my cousin bet someone that a 22 caliber long rifle bullet shot with a pistol wouldn't hurt a thin metal parts washing basin with 6 inches of water in it. He won. I've known about the stopping power of water ever since.

Wow is all I can say cause 50cal is no joke, piercing through body armor like knife slicing through butter. This shows that some movies are accurate when the actor escape a barrage of heavy fire escaping through water.

You guys know they make bullets for water yes? They’re called super cavitating bullets. Funny little notch on the tip forms a low pressure gas pocket the bullet passes through. They go hundreds of feet under water

It makes sense. Anything hitting water with that kind of speed is going to get shredded because water becomes like concrete at those speeds
