The tortoises name is Tommy. He seems to associate the colour black as a male competitor for a mate, and so naturally, he attacks it. He leaves white shoes alone as they mean nothing to him. This is proven when a black shoe is covered with white tape.

Whatever it is, that really upsets the turtle.
