Looks like the landing gear wasn't down, maybe due to damage? I would say if my theory is correct, his landing is a solid 10.

When the Japs shoot out your hydraulics over Leyte, you’re running out of fuel, and have to pull off a carrier landing in a war zone…. Tough to do much better than this. He nailed it. Then he flew a dawn patrol the next morning, and bagged two just for payback.
