This is what Grok says about it "Yes, the incident shown in the video is a real event that occurred in the 1980s at the Fort Bragg military base, North Carolina, United States. It is an accident during a demonstration of a cargo delivery system known as LAPES (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System), which involved a C-130 Hercules aircraft. In this specific case, the aircraft was attempting to perform a low-altitude cargo delivery maneuver, where cargo is extracted from the aircraft by parachute while the aircraft is flying at very low altitude. However, something went wrong during the maneuver, resulting in an accident. This event was not a simple "crazy landing" as suggested in the tweet, but a serious incident that had tragic consequences, including the death of personnel on the ground and significant damage. It is important to note that these types of maneuvers are extremely risky and require precision and ideal conditions to be executed successfully. The crash at Fort Bragg is a reminder of the dangers inherent in these operations and has been documented in several reports and discussions within the military and aviation community."

Muting this account for making light of a fatal crash for likes. Reprehensible behavior and in no way in the spirit of the love of aviation. You embody everything wrong with social media.

LAPES (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System) crash, at Fort Bragg. Air Force stopped using this program in the early 90’s.

Wait did it crash!? It was supposed to smash on ground, leave the cargo and go back up right? That's how this landing works right???

Very old video. But what's really striking is that they added arabic voices in the background, and this happened in the USA. A very poor way to get likes.

1/10, you crashed such a wonderful plane... Rip to the people who got killed... 🕊

The copilot is a friend of mine. He was new in the squadron, and they made him fly with the aircraft commander that nobody would fly with. Another example of hotdog pilots not being reigned in. 😡

Fact: This was an unfortunate accident that could have been prevented if leaders would have listened to complaints about the pilot being dangerous. They didn't listen and five people died...including the dangerous pilot.

That wasn't a landing, that's a crash. Failed 'LAPES' delivery

The drop was successfully made, but making the plane suddenly a lot lighter really messes with its flying. It is a real issue for water bombers.

Not a landing. A LAPES delivery with too high of a descent rate.

Full context here

It crashed

Any landing you walk away from is a good landing. However, I don’t think it applies here.

Well, at least tank is offloaded and safe

Not a landing idiot. It crashed. I was there and filmed the whole thing.

Did anyone say “LAPES” yet?

Well, most of them died, so zero.

The tank seemed to survive.

The Nationality Flags can't come soon enough...

Was the tank okay?

Ex-Ryanair pilot?

The video is a 1989 U.S. Air Force training accident at Sicily Drop Zone, Fort Bragg, NC, during a LAPES (Low-Altitude Parachute Extraction System) demonstration. A C-130 Hercules flew too low; after the cargo pallet was yanked out by parachute, the plane lost lift, struck the ground, cartwheeled, and broke apart. At least one crew member and several on the ground died. LAPES was retired soon after as too risky.

Pope aircraft doing a LAPES drop with too steep of an angle prior to release. I remember it well…. Crew died… bad deal

Called a crash

Wasn't a landing, it was a failed LAPES deployment.

Too hot and heavy

Not so much a "landing "as it is an ending of flight...

Not a landing was pilot error I believe this happened at an air show at pope AFB and I think the crew died

Ooof

I was there in a formation that was to drop personnel on the same drop zone. Sad day for the Air Force and our country.

The pilot was blamed for the accident, but it was clear that the rear parachutes of the cargo tilted the nose of the plane downwards, and although it recovered its tilt, it was too late to avoid the impact.

That's wasn't a landing, that was a failed delivery. The plane wasn't supposed to touch down.

@grok što sw desilo?

LAPES - Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System Not a landing, a way to deliver cargo where no runway is available.
