Clever stuff like this is what I always loved about graphics programming. In the past when HW was more restrictive it was obvious that clever technique is used, nowadays when you can brute force everything it's hard to tell in limited scenes like this one...

Simple techniques like this are the best, which don't need any extra memory, or slow raymarching, upsampling or smearing temporal. Just simply applied in the pixel shader in forward pass, like point lights.

That's the capsule shadow (similar thing). The darkening can be controlled with the slider, or completely turned off per material.
