It's nuts, dude, python and javascript script kiddies are the scum of the programming world. They get so fucking bent out of shape when you suggest that maybe they keep things cross-compatible for a few years' worth of versions at a time

This is still mostly a silly lament. Yeah it sucks that dependency hell is dependency hell, but the alternatives are not much better.

@Jonathan_Blow I mean, almost all software sucks. But I just don’t know how one can speak that confidently and at the same time don’t know what they are talking about. NVM is a version manager for the runtime. And NPM is a package manager. And they all optional.

I'm so glad I'm a .Net developer. Code I wrote for .Net 6 in 2022 will still compile and run on .Net 10. Yeah, there are new features in each version but we have not had any breaking changes.

why doesn’t he understand the difference between managing runtimes and package managers? you don’t strictly need nvm. also yarn and npm are redundant. and package management depends on a runtime, that’s why it’s separate imagine taking shots at js and *missing* embarrassing

It's always been strange to me that this isn't the normal reaction to Node/NPM/etc. "Modern frontend development" is painful/inane before you've even written a line of code. @cmuratori should really talk to @DelaneyGillilan

Just wait till he hears of Python or the fact that you need root to install dependencies to compile CPP programs, as well as two different programs to dynamically build shell scripts which generate your make files to compile your programs

Runtime vs dependencies. They all have versions. At least the runtime does LTS releases.

it really is the stupidest things it’s like java back in the 90s why do we have to redo dependencies and package management and even libraries the ultra fkn hard way - it’s completely unacceptable - then again - iam afraid they don’t know better - it’s stone age ape engineering

I take the node philosophy everywhere.. I pin my ruby, go, python, php, rust compiler version first. Number 1 thing I do. Then find the language's package manager and pin that too. Then install the packages and then pin that too. Next up docker, I need to pin the OS too

I have a deep distaste for JS ecosystem, but what is he talking about? First, most JS software does run fine between different versions of node. Second, there are good reasons to have nvm and npm separate, and I'm not sure how his ignorance here is a good argument. Lastly, he coming from C & C++ world ... where they have complete shitshow of non-standard tooling... how is it better? Not to mention that I _routinely_ hit C++ software that fails to compile between different toolchains due to bugs in compilers and their standard libraries and crappy tooling around it.

v silly but points for comedic value. NVM is just NIX for node. and NPM is a headers registry.

Does he expect to be able to use new node APIs on older node versions?
