Cast Away’s ending has always stayed with me. The mixed emotions Hanks feels upon returning home- he survived, but missed so much. His forehead is still sunburnt but his face is lighter from the beard. It’s a bittersweet moment that only an actor of Tom Hanks’ caliber could nail.

Tom Hanks turns 70 today, which is crazy. Hanks has been around my entire life & as a seminal part of Cinema history. I strongly believe Cast Away is the best Hanks performance of all-time, even though he won Oscars for Forrest Gump & Philadelphia & even though he’s outstanding in Saving Private Ryan. But Hanks’ ability to hold the screen for the entire film here, by himself- with no cast members (Wilson aside)- is one of the great displays of acting this century. Not only that, consider the physical transformation Hanks underwent here. He’s as method as they come in that sense. Cheers to many, many more. 🎂

Filming was halted for nearly a year so that Tom Hanks could physically transform for the role of Chuck Noland, losing around 50 pounds and growing out his hair and beard to realistically portray a man stranded alone on a remote island for years. During the break, director Robert Zemeckis used the time to film What Lies Beneath (2000). When production resumed, Hanks’ dramatic transformation added an authenticity that makeup alone could never achieve. The dedication paid off. Hanks earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and Cast Away became one of the most memorable survival dramas ever made.

Tom Hanks shares a great backstory on voicing the original Toy Story in 1995. Says it only happened because Robin Williams smashed it with Aladdin a few years prior. Hollywood realized a big star could sell an animated film (give something for parents). So, Hanks and Allen tried to do the same improv style. They made 80% of a film but just weren’t on Williams level (Hanks says Williams was the Picasso of Improv). Pixar threw it all out and then Hanks, Allen’s and everyone else worked off a script. *** Full interview here:
