I am neither @ARanganathan72 or @ajeetbharti; they are the Twitter bosses, nor a successful entrepreneur like @talk2anuradha. Being a Dalit (Jatav) from a small village with a population of 500 in Rajasthan, it was an honor and achievement for me to get into one of the IITs. Frankly speaking, I wouldn't have reached there without reservation, so my heartfelt thanks to those who fought for our rights. I certainly feel that our community has come a long way from being the "depressed" classes to a group that now has substantial representation at the lower level in the mainstream. Although GC people keep calling us "undeserving," the gap between the cut-offs of GCs and SCs is hardly 10–15% now. This gap was around 40–50%, 15 years ago. However GCs keep treating us the same as 15 years ago. Nobody is getting selected with 20-30% marks these days (excluding fe exceptions). I also support the concept of the creamy layer in SC/ST reservation. Sub-categorisation may be introduced, but it won't be advisable at this point due to a lack of data. I never faced caste discrimination during my graduation, nor did I hear of any student being discriminated against in the name of caste. Instead of casteism, regionalism was more prevalent in those days. However, for the past few years, the scenario has changed completely, and there are multiple factors responsible for this change. Govt. Policies: The current govt. is trying all the permutations and combinations to win more and more seats in Lok Sabha elections, so they are experimenting. They started with majority appeasement; now they are trying to balance caste/category power. Although it's a good idea, castes/categories that are in power are reluctant to this shift of power. Implicit discrimination to explicit discrimination: As the power is shifting, Savarns are now openly doing things they used to do behind the curtains, like giving marks in interviews, promoting their own people, etc. Nowadays, however, everyone is trying to prove their strength, and thus caste-based discrimination is being done openly. Evolution of so-called "armies/senas": In the battle of power, every caste/group has formed an army for themselves. Although the concept existed long before, the conflict of interests is leading to chaos in society. Caste-based discrimination was limited to society and almost non-existent in colleges. I just hope that this IIT-B atrocities case is false. If not, this would be an alarming condition for the country. As a country, we are already behind and were hoping for the new generations to excel in science and technology. But if premier institutions like IITs are facing these issues, we won't have engineers; rather, we will have radical minds filled with hatred for others.
