Best evening of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip so far: I think a good claim could be made we are as close as you can possibly get to the Garden of Eden on this Earth. We drove the RV for 7 hours to arrive in an amazingly charming little town called Wenquan (温泉), which literally means "hot spring," right on China's border with Kazakhstan. It's called this because (the smartest among you will have guessed it 😋) this place has natural hot springs, which is the central feature of the town: as you can see on the videos 👇there's a stunning hot spring lake packed with migratory birds where people can dip their feet in the water. And, this is where you'll get the Garden of Eden reference, this place is where apples originally come from! All the apple trees worldwide descend from a tree species native to this area - the Malus Sieversii. So, natural hot springs, wild birds, and the original apple tree - I don't know, rings a bell to me... Another fascinating fact about this place: it's mostly inhabited not by Han Chinese, nor Uyghurs, nor even Kazakhs but by Mongols! If you walk around town you'll see all the street signs are written in the Mongol script. In fact we're in a wider county called the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture (博尔塔拉蒙古自治州). Why is that? It's because in the 1760s, Qing dynasty emperor Qianlong needed loyal troops to protect the border right here so he sent a group of around 2,000 Chahar Mongol soldiers and their families all the way from near Beijing to settle here permanently. 260 years later, and their descendants are still here, and many of them actually still guarding the border! THE BEST CHINESE BBQ IN MANCHESTER IS HIDDEN UNDER THE MANCUNIAN WAY Plenty cosplay at streetfood, when in actual fact, they have a roof over their heads 100% of the time. The roof over Best Friend Shaokao is the A57(M), more popularly known as the Mancunian Way, where chums Alven and Wei (the titular ‘best friends’) wheel out their traditional Chinese barbecue - or shaokao. Found where Cambridge Street crosses beneath the Ring Road, Alven and Wei started their food truck business three years ago, as a nostalgic flavour of home for the legion of ex-pats and students that have landed in Manchester in recent years. There’s beef tendon or gizzards for the more adventurous, as well as chicken, pork belly, lamb, and once scorched the hot skewers are stuffed into a plastic bag for you to take to wherever you’re headed, or just tear open and eat as you stand, with a piece of warm flatbread to wrap around them. Like all the best things, you have to work a little for this experience - generally opening from 5.30pm to 10.30pm on Saturdays (not every Saturday though, so check their Instagram to avoid bitter disappointment - they sometimes open on random other days too). Few places in Manchester do stuff as authentic as this without feeling the need to shout about how authentic it is. Best Friend ShaoKao is just there doing it. This BlenderFusion paper basically says "screw trying to describe 3D edits through text" and just... use Blender :-) The idea is pretty straightforward -- instead of trying to cram 3D understanding into a diffusion model, use depth estimation & segmentation to project 2D images into 2.5D meshes, edit them in actual 3D software, then use a fine-tuned diffusion model to make the results photorealistic again. The clever bit is their "dual-stream architecture" -- the model sees both the original scene AND the edited Blender render in parallel, learning to preserve what matters while fixing the inevitable artifacts from transforming imperfect 2.5D/3D reconstructions. They train it with smart masking strategies so it learns when to ignore the original scene (for removals/replacements) and can manipulate objects independently of camera motion. What you get is pretty impressive control -- not just moving objects around, but changing materials, deforming shapes, swapping backgrounds, all while maintaining visual coherence. Neural Assets (one of my favorite papers last year) tried to crack this with learned object tokens, but it struggled with overlapping objects and loses fine details (due to low res DINO encodings). BlenderFusion just sidesteps the whole problem -- want to rotate something 173.5 degrees? Just rotate it in Blender. Want to duplicate an object 8 times? Copy paste away. The diffusion model's only job is making it look photorealistic, not figuring out the 3D underpinnings. The catch? Lacks temporal consistency for animation. Each viewpoint is generated independently, so while a single edit looks great, smoothly animating a car or camera down the street won't work -- you'd get flickering and inconsistencies between frames. That said, this approach is so much more intuitive for finer grain image editing than trying to describe your changes in text prompts. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder why we're trying to do everything inside neural networks when perfectly good 3D tools already exist -- giving you the best of both worlds.

In China I often encounter what I facetiously call “ear rape”: being subjected to an environment that's way too fucking loud. People talk too loudly, blast shortform slop vids on speakerphone, or in this case, honk excessively. My theory on what causes ear rape boils down to: 1. Lack of awareness around how one's behavior impacts others. From what I’ve seen, many really are not conscious that they are being a nuisance in public. Personal boundary and privacy are not as valued compared to other places in East Asia. 2. Baseline anxiety in Chinese society is high. Everyone's on that sigma grindset to obtain money and status and to get ahead. The stress looms over everyone, especially delivery and taxi drivers. Many have this air of impatience about them. Getting stuck in minor traffic is enough for many to explode in anger and honk their tits off. (1) will slowly sort itself out as people in China become more sophisticated and educated. The CPC also has been conspicuously promoting better civic values. Apparently, it has been working, as things have changed drastically compared to just 10 years ago. (2) will be harder to address, as the economy there has cooled and the average folk's future financial outlook seems bearish. Not to be discounted is the innately striver characteristics within Chinese culture (comparison/competition with others, overindexing on school name and company prestige, etc). This is restored footage of a F6F Hellcat belly-landing on a carrier in 1944, with no landing gear, sliding down the deck. Watch what the crew does. They do not run away from the crashing plane. They run toward it. This is the story of the men on the deck.. A Controlled Crash Landing an aircraft on a carrier has been called one of the most difficult and dangerous things in all of aviation. Some pilots described it as a controlled crash. Think about what it involves. A fighter comes screaming toward a tiny strip of deck on a ship that is itself moving through the ocean, pitching on the swell. The pilot has only a few feet of margin. He has to slam his aircraft down onto a precise spot, at exactly the right speed and angle, again and again, every time he comes home. To stop the plane in the short space of the deck, each aircraft had a hook mounted under its tail. As it touched down, that tailhook had to catch one of several steel cables stretched across the deck, called arresting wires. The cable would snatch the speeding fighter and drag it to a halt in about two seconds. But what happened when it went wrong? When Things Went Wrong That is where the danger truly began. If a pilot came in with damaged landing gear, or no gear at all like the Hellcat in this footage, or if his tailhook missed every wire, the aircraft became a several-ton object sliding down a steel deck out of control. And the front of that deck was not empty. It was often packed with other aircraft, fueled and armed, and crowded with men working. A plane that slid all the way forward could plow straight into parked aircraft and deck crews, and turn the whole deck into an inferno. So the carriers had a last line of defense. A crash barrier, a wall of heavy steel cable raised across the middle of the deck, designed to catch a runaway aircraft and stop it before it reached the crowd at the bow. Time and again, that barrier was all that stood between one bad landing and a catastrophe. The Landing Signal Officer Guiding every one of those landings was one man in an incredibly exposed position. He was the Landing Signal Officer, and he stood on a small platform at the aft port side of the flight deck, close to where the aircraft came in. Holding a bright paddle in each hand, he signaled to each incoming pilot, telling him he was too high, too low, too fast, lined up wrong, or clear to land. The pilot trusted those paddles with his life. A good Landing Signal Officer could talk a shaken pilot and a shot-up aircraft safely down onto the deck. It was a job that demanded total calm and split-second judgment, over and over, with lives riding on every signal. One young officer who served as a Landing Signal Officer early in the war, David McCampbell, would go on to become the US Navy's top-scoring ace. The Men Who Ran Toward the Fire Then there were the men who ran toward the fire. The flight deck of a wartime carrier was a storm of spinning propellers, roaring engines, live bombs, high-octane fuel, and steel cables under enormous tension that could snap and cut a man in half. To manage the chaos, the crews wore jerseys in different colors, each color marking a job, so that in the deafening noise everyone could tell at a glance who did what. Men in one color directed the aircraft, another handled the arresting gear, another fueled the planes, another the bombs. And among them were the men in heavy asbestos suits, nicknamed the Hot Papas. Their job, when an aircraft crashed and burst into flames, was to run directly into the fire and pull the pilot out. That is what you are watching in this footage. Friday night, activists conducted disruption/noise-making efforts outside several hotels in Portland, which were suspected of housing ICE agents. Minnesota: The situation in Minneapolis has continued to deteriorate, as riots became more violent and more organized over the weekend. In the vicinity of the shooting site along Nicollet Avenue, civil unrest remained constant throughout the day of the shooting, with many different roadblocks being emplaced on the cardinal points surrounding the site. Similarly, every business on this street that had outdoor decorations, dumpsters, or anything else, found their property stolen so as to emplace the ANTIFA-style roadblocks that are customary of that organization. These roadblocks prevented the free flow of traffic, and remained in place until local police cleared the roadway in the early hours of the next morning.
