Which makes it essentially impossible for existing missile defense systems to intercept. It has a range of over 1,650 mi, meaning it could reach Tehran from launch positions in the Gulf in minutes. The reason CENTCOM wants it now is that Iran has moved its ballistic missile launchers deeper into the country, beyond the reach of the current Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). That is exactly why Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait is the most logical launch point and exactly why Iran is hitting it now. BREAKING; Stealth Giant Awakens: USS Zumwalt Heads to Sea Trials as World's First Hypersonic Missile Destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000), the lead ship of the U.S. Navy's stealthy Zumwalt-class destroyers, has recently begun sea trials after departing from Pascagoula, Mississippi. This marks a significant milestone as it is described as the world’s first destroyer configured to carry intercontinental-range missiles, specifically through integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile system. The Zumwalt-class was originally designed for naval surface fire support with advanced gun systems, but those were removed during refits starting around 2023–2024. The ship is now being repurposed for hypersonic strike capabilities. The CPS is a conventional (non-nuclear) hypersonic weapon system, featuring a two-stage solid rocket booster and a Common-Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB). It provides rapid, precise long-range strikes with intercontinental potential, comparable in reach to some ICBMs but without nuclear warheads.This upgrade allows the Zumwalt to launch these missiles from its large vertical launch system cells (originally 80 Mk 57 VLS cells, with modifications for Advanced Payload Modules). The class's stealth features, large size (over 15,000 tons displacement), and power generation make it an ideal platform for such advanced weapons.
