Molly Mielke McCarthy is on a quest to find exceptional people before the world catches on. I talked to Molly Mielke McCarthy about the art of "peopling", playing your own game, vocation, and why great founders are often the least legible. Today, she runs Moth Fund, where she backs founders at the beginning. In the past, she's worked across design, product, and editorial at Figma, Notion, Stripe Press, The Browser Company, and scouted for Sequoia Capital. Her background in film and design echoes in the people she backs and in the quality of her curation and writing. Molly is people-centric yet fiercely individual, intuitive yet pragmatic, and truth-seeking yet full of care. We discuss: - Why it takes 3 months for her to know someone well enough to invest - Why authenticity is magnetic - The difference between agency and ambition - Why commerciality is a lens you can learn - Illegibility as private confidence, not public uncertainty - How your brand is a bell in other people's heads - Vocation as "stalking your calling" and then yielding to it - Why we should focus on doing something rather than being someone Timestamps: 0:00 - Opening Highlights 1:29 - Intro to Molly 3:36 - Thanks to Notion 5:14 - Start: People, Spikeyness, and Discernment 21:36 - Agency and Ambition 34:45 - Commerciality 49:19 - Investing, Feedback Loops, and Creating a Bat Signal 59:46 - Coaching and Working with Young People 1:06:54 - Self-Knowledge, Uncertainty, "Should," Others' Acceptance, Motivations 1:16:38 - Illegibility & Legibility, Principles, Authentic Service 1:29:28 - Friends, Seeing in the Third Person, Femininity in a Masculine World, Love 1:42:07 - Grab Bag: Art, Catholicism, Gratitude, Beauty Dialectic with Jackson Dahl Ep. 38: Molly Mielke McCarthy - The Art of Peopling - is out now, below and on all platforms.

Mario Gabriele is collector and teller of stories, and he argues that they are the foundation of how we understand the world. I talked to Mario Gabriele 🦊 about writing, what motivates the heroes he is most interested in (founders), and how to see the story underneath the story and get closer to what is true. Mario is founder of The Generalist and more recently, partner at Hummingbird Ventures. He is obsessed with founders and what makes them tick, and has evolved his career consistently to get closer to a seat that is suited just for him. We cover: - how stories can point at something truer than facts - why most writing advice is bad - how great ambition is almost always a product of pain - a rant against "how do you do anything is how you do everything" - Hummingbird's obsession with the texture of someone's mind - why the best investors' rationale fits on a napkin, and why "this founder is insanely good" is actually a deep answer - why The Generalist isn't called Mario's Newsletter (or podcast) - why he gave up some independence for Hummingbird Timestamps: 0:00 - Opening Highlights 1:13 - Intro to Mario 3:58 - Start: Stories, Truth, Writing, and the Story Beneath the Story 23:39 - Failure, Authenticity, Comparative Advantage, and The Most Annoying Aphorism in the World 35:55 - The Generalist's Style 45:20 - Process, Goals, Vision, Experimentation, and Business Models 57:52 - Investing: Energy, First Checks, Notecard-level Clarity, and Peter Thiel 1:07:46 - Understanding Founders, Motivation, Good and Bad Fuel, and True Ambition 1:17:47 - Hummingbird: Seeing the World as it Actually Is and How Stories Reveal Truth, Linguistics, Observation, Deciding to Join, and Evolution 1:29:32 - Motivation, Raising the Bar, Ongoing Learning and Teachability, Status, Unlearning, Generous Products, and The Reward of Not Knowing Dialectic 43: Mario Gabriele - Reality is Story-Shaped - is available below and on all platforms. We The Builders EPISODE 1 is LIVE with Shahin Farshchi at Lux Capital Shahin has invested in companies manufacturing in space (Varda Space Industries), building autonomous transportation systems (Zoox), providing robots as a service (Formic), automating industries (Covariant), using space to revolutionize the Earth observation industry (Planet), 3D printing rockets (Relativity Space) and many more. The Jetsons Future I thought I would be living in 2025 is partly being built. We have a long way to go but this is exactly how we inspire the next generation. If someone from 1900 woke up and read this, they would call it science fiction. Thank you Shahin, for believing in and being a partner to these incredible companies and founders. Shahin is an incredibly kind soul, helpful, accessible and a role model for younger aspiring venture capitalists. From what I have personally observed and heard from friends building companies, he will cheer you on and have incredible empathy for the fact that you had the courage to build. From President Bush, to Thrive's team and founders, to new leaders building in his hometown of Birmingham and globally, Jared Weinstein is an amplifier of people. Paul Scherer wants to create an AI that brings us closer to each other. paul and Eigen are building a "mutual friend" for the world. Critically, the mutual part is more important than the friend part. Imagine the best "connector" you know -- the person who is emotionally intelligent, thoughtful, and always bringing people together. What if they could be friends with a million people, rather than a few hundred? And what if they were entirely focused on creating more belonging in the world? Modern social media--due to hyper-personalization and broken incentives--makes us feel more and more estranged from the people we care about. AI chatbots focus on engagement and can be anti-social. Paul and Eigen are aiming for a pro-social AI friend who is more concerned with helping deepen and widen your relationships than getting you to talk to it for longer. We discuss what all this might look like, the challenges of "growing" a new person that isn't a bad actor, and what it feels like to be a prodigious 22-year-old who Peter Fenton compared to the founders of last generation's great social media companies--all before he’s publicly launched a product. Ep. 29: Billy Oppenheimer - Attuned to Clues Billy Oppenheimer (Billy Oppenheimer) is a researcher and writer who works closely with Ryan Holiday and Rick Rubin, and publishes the “Six at 6” newsletter. Billy is also working on his first book, The Work is the Win. We kick off by discussing one of my favorite new ideas: "looking for clues," a process and philosophy for creativity that Billy learned from Rick Rubin. He shares the story Rick told him when he learned and adopted this language, which is so representative of how Billy (and I!) research in our work. From there, we talk about Billy's robust research process and how he has created an external brain of the ideas and patterns that inspire him rather than relying on memory. We also talk about the importance of time as a filter and a series of maxims that underpin his work and creativity. We discuss the importance of inputs over outputs and his big idea and book title, "The Work is the Win," as well many related ideas on success, complacency, compounding, standards, initiative, local maximums, and more. We finish with some lessons from Billy's favorite people. This conversation is a field guide for making things, pushing through the messiness of progress, and attuning yourself to the richness of the world that often takes the shape of clues. Nicholas Thompson is a disciplined machine (Atlantic CEO, record-holding runner, perpetual achiever) and a wholehearted human (insatiable interviewer, loving father, lifelong student). I talked to nxthompson about what makes words worth reading in an AI world, the discipline of long form, and what compounds when you keep showing up. Nick is the CEO of The Atlantic, the American record holder in the 50K, and the author of The Running Ground—a book about inheritance, pushing oneself, and remembering that life remains richer than we can possibly know. We discuss whether I am a journalist; why The Atlantic matters, great editing and coaching; lessons from David Remnick and the gift of commercial constraints from Laurene Powell Jobs; daily momentum and how tiny tailwinds compound; getting paced to a 5-minute mile by his 15-year-old son; inheritance and Nick's exuberant, chaotic dad; the part of Nick's book that he's never been asked about; and why we are capable of much more than we think. If you don’t understand how to build a business around yourself, you will never be wealthy. Give me 2 minutes and I will teach you my 7-part system to start a business from nothing and scale to $10,000 or even $100,000 per month. (I used this exact system to build multiple 7-figure businesses and coach founders like you to do the same): Founders often ask, “Why should I build a personal media company? I’m not trying to get famous!” I think that’s like someone saying, “Why should I use a computer? I’m not trying to build Google!” Brands are everything - it’s your digital reputation, your credibility, and your reach. Your personal brand should persuade the people you sell to. It increases your surface area for: • Luck • Community • Connections In most dealrooms I walk into, the deals are already closed - they just want to see my face. Brands are now led by founders, not corporations. 1. Clarify Your Brand's Mission Your brand's essence must reflect your convictions - the values that steer your way of being. Journal daily about what you want to build and where you want to be in 10 years. Get clear on what it is that gets you out of bed each morning. 2. Apply the '5 Whys' technique: When you’re making a decision, drill down to its root cause by asking ‘Why?’ 5 times. Unearth your foundational 'why' - the motivator that drives you. What you’re really trying to answer: “why is what you’re doing compelling?” 3. Forge Your Audience with Consistent Content Creation Content is the lifeblood of your personal brand, magnifying your presence. Set time for writing and publishing on a platform - and commit. Prioritize regularity over sporadic bouts of inspiration. Done > perfect 4. Distill Your Unique Expertise and Find Your Niche Highlight your specific expertise - create and dominate a niche you can call your own. Drill down into the core interests you and your audience share. Own their attention and develop a meaningful connection over the long term. 5. Cultivate Authentic Relationships and Foster Community At the heart of your brand is its community - a group united by your vision. Providing value > transactions Real relationships > revenue Narrate your founding story candidly - authenticity attracts your community. 6. Build a Community The goal is to build a community of raving fans around your curiosity. • Embrace your weirdness • Test hypotheses through writing • Build your tribe of non-conformists Attract people who share your vision. 7. Every Brand is a Media Company Building a 7-figure personal media company is a mix of strategy, consistency, and genuineness. Find your mission. Stand for something significant. Nurture a supportive community. Provide value without fail. Follow this path, and watch your personal media company ascend like no other. If you want to learn more, check out my 7-part system in the video below. I teach you how to start a business from nothing, starting with yourself. Check out the replies below if you prefer YouTube, Spotify, or Apple.
