Oh please. Since when did trophies become the be-all and end-all of football banter and discourse? Because this is a very dangerous precedent you’re setting. Yes, trophies matter. They’re ultimately what you play for. Nobody is disputing that. But if every football discussion gets reduced to “How many trophies?”, you completely erase everything that happens on the pitch. You’re minimizing and dismissing the small wins, performances, progress, consistency, tactical superiority, individual development, head-to-head dominance and improvement from one season to the next simply because they didn’t end with silverware. Context matters. If we were ONLY talking about trophies, then Spurs are better than Arsenal because they won a European trophy, even though they’ve finished 17th twice in the last two seasons. Manchester United haven’t improved because they went from 15th to 3rd, simply because they didn’t win a trophy. Sunderland are a shit team because they came up from the Championship, made Europe and showed significant progress, but because they didn’t win a trophy, apparently none of that matters. Do you see how ridiculous that logic becomes? A team can lose a trophy and still have had the better season in certain aspects. A player can outperform another player without winning a trophy. A manager can demonstrably improve a team without immediately lifting silverware. You can finish higher in the league, accumulate more points, play better football, improve defensively, score more goals, dominate your rivals and show clear progression, and somehow all of that is supposed to mean nothing because you didn't win a trophy? That's not how football works. Trophies are the reward for success, but they don't provide the entire context of that success. Winning a trophy doesn't automatically mean you were better in every other aspect, just like failing to win one doesn't mean you were bad. If trophies are literally the only thing we're allowed to use as evidence in football discussions, then half the debates people have every day become completely pointless.
