Chief McDonnell is *very* sensitive about LAPD’s helicopters!

Here’s Chief McDonnell’s response to how the George Floyd protests changed policing, which is entirely centered around officer retention/hiring.

Worth noting that the Chief is severely understating the extent to which councilmembers may be questioning the efficacy of our helicopters. Multiple members spoke out on them last week & a few years ago we had 6 votes to reroute $ for new helicopters.

While Chief McDonnell has no problem blaming protesters for harming officer recruitment, when he’s asked if the racist/sexist/homophobic culture exposed in recently released recordings harms recruitment he fails to directly answer the question.

The Chief is asked about LAPD legal liabilities and officer involved shootings. He dismisses use of force incidents as “largely out of control of the Officer or department as far as exposure to the those threats” and repeatedly refers to them as “part of the job.”

Some say hey, crime is falling while the number of officers is falling so maybe we don’t need more cops? Chief McDonnell believes more cops = less crime and strongly pushes back on that idea. He would like to see 10,500 sworn officers, and ultimately get up to 12,500.
