When commercial space got kicked off in the US the government didn’t expect SpaceX to become what they are with the ability to get to moon or mars. The current administration is in a quandary because they want to beat China but they don’t want Elon/SpaceX to get the credit for it.

NEW: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is set to announce plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon, according to Politico. According to new documents, the United States will be announcing expedited plans for the project. NASA is hoping to launch a nuclear reactor by 2030. "The reactor directive orders the agency to solicit industry proposals for a 100 kilowatt nuclear reactor to launch by 2030, a key consideration for astronauts’ return to the lunar surface," Politico reported. The directive says that the first country to put a reactor on the moon could "declare a keep-out zone which would significantly inhibit the United States." NASA wants the launch to happen by 2030 because this is near the time China plans on landing its first astronaut on the moon. Rolls-Royce recently unveiled its own lunar nuclear reactor. They released the following video.
