What about the reefs that you’ve built on? China has been extensively building on reefs in the South China Sea, particularly in the Spratly and Paracel Islands, since around 2013. This involves large-scale land reclamation, where dredgers pile sand and sediment onto coral reefs to create artificial islands. The islands host military facilities like airstrips (three in the Spratlys, capable of handling fighter jets), radar systems, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile systems, and ports. Civilian infrastructure, such as lighthouses and research stations, is also present, though often dual-use. Mischief Reef, for example, has extensive buildings, hangars, and seaports. • Environmental Impact: The construction has destroyed over 8,500 hectares of coral reefs, disrupting marine ecosystems and fisheries critical to regional food security. Sediment plumes from dredging smother marine life and may contain pollutants. China claims to be restoring reefs, but these efforts are limited and criticized as insufficient.
