China’s largest state-owned shipyard, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, built more commercial vessels by tonnage in 2024 than the entire US shipbuilding industry had since World War II. This reflects the declining shipbuilding capability of the US, which currently has only four active public shipyards compared to China’s 35 sites. According to reports, the new aircraft carrier with a displacement of 110-120 thousand tons is being built at a shipyard in Dalian and is designed as a direct competitor to the American Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. Unlike previous Chinese ships, the Type 004 will combine a nuclear power plant (based on Longwei reactors) with electromagnetic catapults and a full-size deck, providing virtually unlimited sailing range. The Type 004 is expected to carry an air group of more than 90 aircraft, including 24-30 J-15T fighters and more than 20 fifth-generation J-35 aircraft, as well as KJ-600 AWACS planes and unmanned aerial vehicles.
