So Uniqlo doesn't use Xinjiang cotton, the implication being that their is forced labor there. The BBC, with no evidence claims there have been revelations of forced labor, despite numerous UN investigations finding no forced labor. I, personally, went to the cotton fields of Xinjiang, and for days of driving through the cotton farms, found automation, and no signs of forced labor. My journalistic expedition confirmed what the UN found: No forced labor. And not only did the UN not find forced labor, the UN Rights Special Countcil called on the US to end their unilateral sanctions on companies doing business with Xinjiang cotton enterprises. US sanctions hurt the local people of Xinjiang, Uygurs, as well as numerous other local ethnic minorities. China has passed a new ‘ethnic unity’ law which critics warn could in fact worsen the rights of ethnic minorities. Children must now be taught in Mandarin rather than their native language. There are 55 ethnic minority groups in China which represent less than 10 per cent of the population. On paper, the new legislation aims to promote integration between minority groups and China says it’ll help people get jobs in the future. But critics argue that this will cut people off from their culture and language and is an attempt to assimilate them further into the Han ethnic majority. China has long been accused of restricting the rights of ethnic minorities such as Uyghurs, Mongols and Tibetans.

This is so funny. I followed Luke's recommendation in the comments yesterday 👇 and went to this Russian bakery here in Yining, Xinjiang. And I met the man himself: Alexander, a Chinese Russian! He looks 100% Russian but speaks Chinese like a local. And he is, in fact, a local: we chatted a bit and he explained his family history - they've been here in Xinjiang for 6 generations! This is something people commonly don't know about: China recognizes 55 official ethnic minorities living in the country and Russians is one of them - there are quite a few Russians exactly like Alexander who look Russians in all respects but are Chinese. We saw many of them during our previous RV roadtrip in Dongbei on the border with Russia, it's more unexpected to meet one here in the middle of Xinjiang 😅

Day 3 of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip: we're standing right at the border between the North of Xinjiang and the South, separated by the massive TianShan mountain range with some of the world's highest mountains (highest peak at 7,439 meters, 24,406 ft). That's something people often don't realize: if you take the top 10 highest mountain ranges in the world, 7 of them are in China and 4 in Xinjiang specifically: Karakoram (which includes K2, the world's 2nd highest peak), Pamir, TianShan (these very mountains we're at the bottom of) and Kunlun. People have this impression of Xinjiang as just deserts but it's actually one of the most mountainous regions on Earth. The TianShan mountains are especially interesting in terms of geography because they literally cut Xinjiang in two - North and South - with completely different climates, ecosystems and cultures on each side. We're currently standing North of the mountains which is the comparatively green and rainy part of Xinjiang. Yes, the dry landscape you see in the video is the *rainy* part of Xinjiang which gives you an idea of just how dry the South is! Our program for the next few days is to drive alongside the mountains until we reach the Ili valley, which is especially famous for its flower fields and lush green landscape - probably the last thing you'd expect to find in Xinjiang - due to its position between mountains that allows it to trap a lot of the region's moisture.

I get asked this question a lot, what about Chinese Muslims? If the Uyghurs are oppressed then what about the Hui Muslims, how come they are free to practice Islam? The key difference between the Uyghurs and Hui Muslims in China lies in how the government perceives them. Their Islamic practices are often less politically sensitive because they align more closely with state-approved expressions of religion. An update on #GlobalMarchToGaza - myself and many others including Canadians are being held up at a checkpoint between Cairo and Ismailia. Everyone’s passport has been taken. We have been told that no one is allowed to cross this checkpoint unless if they are Egyptian. People are not getting their passports back. Some have been waiting for hours. Some people have been told to get their passports back, they have to get on a bus to the airport to be deported. There are hundreds and estimated 1000 people at this checkpoint alone. People are rallying and chanting at this checkpoint - “Free Free Palestine”.
