So Uniqlo doesn't use Xinjiang cotton, the implication being that their is forced labor there. The BBC, with no evidence claims there have been revelations of forced labor, despite numerous UN investigations finding no forced labor. I, personally, went to the cotton fields of Xinjiang, and for days of driving through the cotton farms, found automation, and no signs of forced labor. My journalistic expedition confirmed what the UN found: No forced labor. And not only did the UN not find forced labor, the UN Rights Special Countcil called on the US to end their unilateral sanctions on companies doing business with Xinjiang cotton enterprises. US sanctions hurt the local people of Xinjiang, Uygurs, as well as numerous other local ethnic minorities. (UN Human Rights Council Report Here: Currently, Chinese netizens are angry at Uniqlo, and are intent on reducing their shopping at the brand's stores. The solution for Uniqlo is simple. China has passed a new ‘ethnic unity’ law which critics warn could in fact worsen the rights of ethnic minorities. Children must now be taught in Mandarin rather than their native language. There are 55 ethnic minority groups in China which represent less than 10 per cent of the population. On paper, the new legislation aims to promote integration between minority groups and China says it’ll help people get jobs in the future. But critics argue that this will cut people off from their culture and language and is an attempt to assimilate them further into the Han ethnic majority. China has long been accused of restricting the rights of ethnic minorities such as Uyghurs, Mongols and Tibetans.

This is so funny. I followed Luke's recommendation in the comments yesterday 👇 and went to this Russian bakery here in Yining, Xinjiang. And I met the man himself: Alexander, a Chinese Russian! He looks 100% Russian but speaks Chinese like a local. And he is, in fact, a local: we chatted a bit and he explained his family history - they've been here in Xinjiang for 6 generations! This is something people commonly don't know about: China recognizes 55 official ethnic minorities living in the country and Russians is one of them - there are quite a few Russians exactly like Alexander who look Russians in all respects but are Chinese. We saw many of them during our previous RV roadtrip in Dongbei on the border with Russia, it's more unexpected to meet one here in the middle of Xinjiang 😅

Day 3 of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip: we're standing right at the border between the North of Xinjiang and the South, separated by the massive TianShan mountain range with some of the world's highest mountains (highest peak at 7,439 meters, 24,406 ft). That's something people often don't realize: if you take the top 10 highest mountain ranges in the world, 7 of them are in China and 4 in Xinjiang specifically: Karakoram (which includes K2, the world's 2nd highest peak), Pamir, TianShan (these very mountains we're at the bottom of) and Kunlun. People have this impression of Xinjiang as just deserts but it's actually one of the most mountainous regions on Earth. The TianShan mountains are especially interesting in terms of geography because they literally cut Xinjiang in two - North and South - with completely different climates, ecosystems and cultures on each side. We're currently standing North of the mountains which is the comparatively green and rainy part of Xinjiang. Yes, the dry landscape you see in the video is the *rainy* part of Xinjiang which gives you an idea of just how dry the South is! Our program for the next few days is to drive alongside the mountains until we reach the Ili valley, which is especially famous for its flower fields and lush green landscape - probably the last thing you'd expect to find in Xinjiang - due to its position between mountains that allows it to trap a lot of the region's moisture.

The hijab is not “cultural clothing.” Women in Islamic countries are forced to shroud their bodies and their personalities in the name of religion. It has nothing to do with culture. I get asked this question a lot, what about Chinese Muslims? If the Uyghurs are oppressed then what about the Hui Muslims, how come they are free to practice Islam? The key difference between the Uyghurs and Hui Muslims in China lies in how the government perceives them. Hui Muslims, who are ethnically Han and speak Mandarin, are generally viewed as more integrated into Chinese society. Their Islamic practices are often less politically sensitive because they align more closely with state-approved expressions of religion. While the Chinese government does impose restrictions on Hui religious activities—such as controls over mosque construction and the removal of Arabic script from public signs—these measures have been far less severe than the crackdown on Uyghurs. In recent years, the Chinese government has increased pressure on the Hui as well, closing religious schools and demolishing some mosques. Those who deliberately spread lies about Xinjiang and its Muslim population are just shameless liars. They try to use Xinjiang’s majestic diversity to internally destabilise China and externally create a rift between the Muslim world and China. Now that I have spent more than 20 days in Xinjiang, I can say with complete confidence that the Western narrative about Xinjiang is just that: a lie. I believe China’s rise won’t be stopped by some insecure hegemonists who have been discredited domestically and internationally. The hegemonists’ delusion to brutally and rapaciously dominate the world is now on full display for the entire world to see, especially in Palestine, Ukraine and Taiwan. The hegemonists’ sense of insecurity about their place in the world is making them reveal their true nature, their predatory behaviour, their brazen hypocrisy, their extreme incompetence and their ugly immorality. Whether the hegemonists like it or not, the world is inevitably moving into a new order, simply because most of the world badly wants it. The Turks are not Arabs and they are one of the few blocs within Islamic civilisation who can separate Islam from Arabization. They identify as Muslims yet they kept Turkic culture and traditions unlike many ethnic nations in the Middle East, North Africa and East Africa who have been Arabized and assimilated because they could not separate religious identity from ethnic identity. The inability to separate religious identity from ethnic identity is why the Hausas were subsumed in the North and why the Berbers who Arabized in North Africa. In the Middle East, it is only the Turks, Kurds and Persians who understand this concept very well. The rest who did not pay attention to it have been Arabized thinking they are practising puritanical religion. This is why we must Think Yoruba First.
